Introduction:
A clock movement is the part of the clock that does all the work, the gearbox. You would use all your old componants such as dial, pendulum, weights, all these parts will fit onto the new movement just as they did on the old one.
Most modern clocks are still in production, by modern, is after about 1960. Replacing a movement is usually less cost than a repair or cleaning of an old movement. Sometimes people get attached to there clock and want to keep it original, but really it is best to keep the case sentimental and just replace the clock movement. We charge more to overhaul a modern clock movement than the cost of a brand new unit. This is because of the time put into it and the cost of the tools and solutions.
To Identify the clock movement:
We would need to know the movement numbers off of the back plate of the movement itself. Not off the paperwork, not off the clock case.
You would then match up the numbers close to the ones listed so you can figure out who really made your clock movement. Many case makers will say it is there movement as if they made it, but really it is one of the below companies that made the movement for them and put there name on it. This is why when we look for the movement numbers, we do not look at the paperwork because that information is not accuarate as far as who really made the clock movement.

Many case makers used there names on the movement, but the movement numbers will tell us who made it.

AVAILABILITY
We have just about every Hermle clock movement made. Sometimes we would need to regear a movement to match the CM length, but this is an exception.
Hermle is the easiest company to work with as far as getting parts or componants such as dials and pendulums as well as movements.
Clock movements made by Hermle usually last 26-33 years or so and then its time to get them serviced or replaced. If you look at the back plate of the movement sometimes you will see a date stamp such as 84 or 79 or similar.
We here at Clockworks only carry the best grade of clock movements with no plastic componants.

This would be a Jauch clock movement. These are no longer made, but we maybe able to help with a Hermle retrofit.
If it says made in Germany and there is not much infomation on it but just numbers similar to the ones listed, and its chain driven with a wood stick pendulum, then it is Jauch.
AVAILABILITY
If the clock is chain driven with a wood stick pendulum then we can go with a Hermle movement instead of Jauch.

First is the date, then is the Kieninger clock movement series number and then is the pendulum length from the top of the movement.
AVAILABILITY
Kieninger clock movements are sometimes a bit tricky to tell what the accual number is. They give part of the numbers but then it is up to you to use the chart to figure out the rest of it. This would depend on if the movement is chain driven or cable, the pendulum length and so on.
Kieninger clock movements are available usually with no problem. The 5 tube movements are no longer made but the rest is usually in stock.
OTHER NAMES USED
Everybody loves the name Seth Thomas
EXAMPLES
A402-000
Or
A206-014
A415-020
And similar
DESCRIPTION
If it starts with an A then usually it is Seth Thomas. But of course Seth Thomas can mean anything really. If the clock is made in Germany, starts with an A, then it is really Hermle or Keininger. Usually Hermle.
AVAILABILITY
Seth Thomas name is on everything now a days. If someone says I have a Seth Thomas, that could mean a movement that takes a battery or mechanical or anything really. Back in the olden days there was a company who sold many many movements out of Plymouth, CT and so they changed the name of the town to Thomaston, CT after the company.
So now if the clock is very old and made in USA with a ST markings, well that is original Seth Thomas and there would be no replacement movement for this, best to get repaired.
If the Seth Thomas movement says made in Germany, then use our list to see what the real movement numbers are so you can price it out and order it.
OTHER NAMES USED
They used only Mason and Sullivan name
EXAMPLES
3397X
Or
3268X
3200X
And similar
DESCRIPTION
If it ends in a X then is a Mason and Sullivan clock movement, but this means it is really some other maker. You would use the chart to find out the correct numbers.
AVAILABILITY
Mason and Sullivan did not make clock movements. They purchased many clock movements from other suppliers so they were able to have there name put on the movement with there numbering system. You would need to go to the mason and sullivan page and find the clock movement number, and then you will see the real movement number that you can order.
HOW TO ORDER:
The numbering system on Hermle clock movements are as the example below
Movement Back Plate Example:
79
Howard Miller
1161-850
114cm
In this example the movement numbers are 1161-850 114cm, this tells us the plate size, the hand shaft length, the drive wether it is spring driven, cable driven or chain, and many other things.
Movements may vary from the picture
The matching of the movement number is what makes the difference,
if the old movement number matches on the list, then you will get that exact same movement.
NOTE:
Hermle makes movements for various cabinet makers and marks there name onto the movement, so you may have a Hermle movement even it has a different name on it. Some other names made by Hermle are Seth Thomas (the newer Seth), Tally Industries, Howard Miller, Mason & Sullivan and others.
ALSO NOTE:
Many of the Hermle movements have been improved upon by the factory over time. Some have bronzed bushings in key wear areas to increase the life of the movement, and on the non-pendulum units the balance has been improved upon for longer life and ease of timing.
