Kieninger Clock Movement Identification

Kieninger Clock Movement Identification is done by the numbers off of the back plate of the movement itself. There are some markings stamped into the brass back plate of the clock movement. These numbers will let you get the price of a new clock movement therefore have the option for a new one. Most likely the clock movement is still in production and available brand new. A brand new unit is the best way to go for cost savings, speed of job completion, and the longevity of a functioning clock.

To get the new clock movement price and what it includes, we start with the numbers. The numbers are also required to get components of the clock also. Components include pendulums, dials, hands, keys, cranks, chime blocks, mounting screws, weights, pulleys or chains.

Kieninger Clock Movement Identification

What the numbers tell us

The numbers and or letters may or may not tell us the year it was produced. The letter indicates what the movement series is. The CM length of the pendulum from the top of the movement down to the bottom of the pendulum. This length is based on a 4 1/2 inch bob diameter, if the bob is bigger, the pendulum is longer. With this information we can supply a new movement or any of the previously mentioned components.

What the new unit will include

The new clock movement will include chains or cables, the pulleys if its cable driven, the leader and suspension spring. Basically this is everything that comes out with the two screws underneath less the dial and hands if it is a floor clock.

Decoding Kieninger

So lets say the movement's numbers are 81 K 116cm.

  • 1981 =The first numbers 81 is the year made, only on older units. On new units, this number is not the year.
  • K = The K is the movements series. This is the basic raw movement plate size and internal gear configuration.
  • 116CM = The pendulum length, in centimeters, from the top of the movement all the down to the bottom of the rating nut, based on a smallest 4 1/2 inch bob diameter.

Above is stated 81 was the date, however this has changed in the later years. After a certain date that first number is no longer the date produced. So it may or may not be the date, but you can just ignore that first number when replacing the unit.

If this decoding process is confusing, just email the numbers or a picture to [email protected] Kieninger clock movement questions and ordering can be done by phone also 800-381-7458.

Kieninger Clock Movement Ordering

Kieninger Clock Movement Ordering starts with the numbers off of the back plate of the clockworks. The numbers help us figure out the correct unit by plate size. After we get the plate size we narrow it down by attributes such as triple chime. In other works all the units that have the letter K on the back will have the same plate size. After we determine we have a K series we select things like triple chime or Westminster only. If there is any uncommon things added after that we select it. Such as sequential or carousal or other special qualities added such as this.

The new movement will fit into the clock case just as the old one did. Keep using the same components such as the dial, pendulum, chime block and weights. If it is a weight driven clock it will come with the chains or cables with pulleys.

Kieninger Clock Movement - Why Replace

The simple and obvious truth is you cannot repair or overhaul a clock movement better than brand new. It just is what it is, this is a fact, the best clockmaker in the world cannot make it better than a brand new unit. A new one costs a fraction of an overhaul and its done right away, same movement, no knock offs. This is an easy decision to get a new one instead of chasing the old one.

To repair an old Kieninger clock movement would cost the same, if not more, than a new movement. The new Kieninger clock movement can ship the same day as the order, costs less money, and is easier to deal with than having the old movement cleaned and overhauled.

Kieninger Clock Movement - Why Replace - we ship from USA the same day you order it, so the time it takes you to get you're clock up and running is very short. A repair can usually take months and then you are still left with a used overhauled movement rather than a new one.

When you receive a new movement it is the same as you're old movement, so all clock components will fit on to the new movement. The cost of a new movement is usually the same if not less than a cleaning on the old unit, and when it's installed it should last another 25-30 years without thinking about replacing or servicing it again. Some new units have bronzed bushings in key wear areas to increase the life of the movement, and on the non-pendulum units the balance has been improved upon for longer life and ease of timing. We here at Clockworks offer only the highest grade mechanical clock movements and they come with a 2 year warranty.

About Kieninger Clock Company

About Kieninger Clock Company this mechanical clock movement producer has made alot of the post war grandfather clocks found in the modern world. At the same time they are the oldest existing German manufacturer of mechanical movements.

The Kieninger movement excels with a high level of design and manufacturing quality. Numerous innovations and patents (16-rod chimes; second indication for pendulum lengths under 116 cm; automatic beat adjustment, night time shut-off systems for 1/2-hour and 1/4-hour movements; automatic chime sequencing; various manufacturing processes and components) are the measure for design quality. Manufacturing quality shows in every Kieninger Clock Movement: All Kieninger Clock Movement plates are made of a special brass alloy which is hard and has a tensile strength of 53 kp/mm2. The holes for the journals are reamed and smoothed after lacquering and then receive an oil sink.

Each Kieninger Clock Movement has pinions which are made of high-quality steel or stainless steel. Fast turning pinions are hardened. All journals are roller burnished in a special process. Some movements feature bronze-bushings and/or jewels in critical positions. The gears in the Kieninger Clock Movement are made of a very tough and hard brass alloy with a tensile strength of 62 kp/mm2.

A high level of corrosion protection for all components is assured. Brass components are pickled and receive a coat of clear lacquer. Steel components are made from stainless steel or receive a galvanic nickel coating. Each Kieninger Clock Movement has a laser engraved serial number.

*J Balance Movement Note

The J series movements can be problematic. If you order the J series please be advised that you may have to wind the movement two times in a 8 day period rather than once. Also there is a plastic cover over the platform balance versions, this plastic is always cracked by the time it gets to the customer and is common to remove this cover all together. Just consider it a protective cover for the balance during the shipping process and discard it. The plastic cover is not considered a warranty item as its only to protect the balance during shipping as stated.

**Kieninger AEL12

The new Kieninger AEL12 movement replaces the AEL01 and AEL02. It's platform is redesigned with a material that is 10 times harder than the original plastic used. Many are replacing the balance platforms on the older units. We are offering a new movement with the redesigned platform because the new balances are not yet available separate from the movement. The movement also now has removable winding arbors as well as the double clock safety winding system. Note that it also interchanges with the Hermle 340-020 unit.
