About Kieninger Clock Company
Kieninger is the oldest existing manufacturer of mechanical movements for floor, wall and mantel clocks in the world.
The Kieninger movement excels with a high level of design and manufacturing quality. Numerous innovations and patents (16-rod chimes; second indication for pendulum lengths under 116 cm; automatic beat adjustment, night time shut-off systems for 1/2-hour and 1/4-hour movements; automatic chime sequencing; various manufacturing processes and components) are the measure for design quality.
Manufacturing quality shows in every Kieninger Clock Movement: All Kieninger Clock Movement plates are made of a special brass alloy which is hard and has a tensile strength of 53 kp/mm2. The holes for the journals are reamed and smoothed after lacquering and then receive an oil sink.
Each Kieninger Clock Movement has pinions which are made of high-quality steel or stainless steel. Fast turning pinions are hardened. All journals are roller burnished in a special process. Some movements feature bronze-bushings and/or jewels in critical positions. The gears in the Kieninger Clock Movement are made of a very tough and hard brass alloy with a tensile strength of 62 kp/mm2.
A high level of corrosion protection for all components is assured. Brass components are pickled and receive a coat of clear lacquer. Steel components are made from stainless steel or receive a galvanic nickel coating. Each Kieninger Clock Movement has a laser engraved serial number.
Why order a new Kieninger clock movement?
To repair an old Kieninger clock movement would cost the same, if not more, than a new movement.
The new Kieninger clock movement can ship the same day as the order, costs less money, and is easier to deal with than having the old movement cleaned and overhauled.
How to identify the Kieninger movement
The numbers on the brass back plate of the Kieninger clock movement is where we need to start with the identification, so we can determine the proper replacement.
The numbers and or letters will tell us the year it was produced, what letter movement series it is (this will also tell us the plate size) and then the CM length of the pendulum from the top of the movement down to the bottom of the pendulum rating nut threads.
How to order the Kieninger movement
With the numbers off of the back plate of the Kieninger mechanical clock movement, we can now figure out the correct replacement movement.
The new movement will fit into the clock case just as the old one did, using the same components such as the dial and pendulum. So lets say the movement's numbers are 81 K 116cm, the 81 is the year produced (1981) and the K is the movements series and plate size, and the 116 is the pendulum length, in centimeters, from the top of the movement all the down to the bottom of the rating nut.
When finding the correct new movement, we first only need to be concerned with the letter K. We use the chart, located below, and get to the K section (Such as KSU33) and then match up your movements attributes with the list. For instance, if your movement is stamped 81 K 116cm, and is triple chime and cable driven with 116cm stamped on the back, you would most likely need a KSU33 as long as the hand shaft length is correct.

What happened to the old movement?
The movements clock oil becomes solidified with age and rather than a lubricant it turns to a sticky tar like substance that creates resistance in the gear train.
This solidified oil creates wear on the movements outer brass plates in the holes that the gear pivots ride inside of. The holes become oblong instead of round and pinches the pivots instead of letting them spin freely. With the solid oil and the pinched pivots, the clock stops functioning properly.
Three Weight Rectangle Units
The largest of the Kieninger movements, this is the 9 tubular bell clock movement. This is the only 9 tube movement that Kieninger made, so if your movement has 9 tubes hanging on the back, and says Kieninger, is cable driven, this is the right unit.
Large 6 x 9 chain driven clock movement that would say Kieninger on the movement and 116cm. Available in Westminster only (8 hammers 4+4) or triple chime (12 hammers 4+8). They both have a hand shaft length of 56mm from the front plate of the movement and all the way out to the end of the minute hand nut threads.
The K units are the most produced 3 weight movement series that Kieninger has created. They have a hand shaft length of 47mm from the front plate of the movement and all the way out to the end of the minute hand nut threads. The movement will have a date code, then K and then the CM length listed on the back plate of the movement. Such as 83 K 116CM.
The MS / MSU units is another very popular 3 weight movement series. They have a hand shaft length of 47mm from the front plate of the movement and all the way out to the end of the minute hand nut threads. The movement may have a date code, then MS or MSU and then the CM length listed on the back plate of the movement. Such as MSU 116CM. The MSU is interchangeable with the KSU, its the same unit but slightly lower grade.
Three Weight Square Units
Square Westminster chain driven movement will say on the back plate something similar to 79 RK 93CM. The movements hand shaft is measured from the front plate all the way out to the very end of the minute hands rating nut threads.
Square, triple chime, chain driven movement will say on the back plate something similar to 79 R 93CM or 81 RU 116cm. The movements hand shaft is measured from the front plate all the way out to the very end of the minute hands rating nut threads.
Square, Westminster chime, chain driven movement will say on the back plate something similar to 79 SKS 116CM or 80 SK 116cm. The hammer location on these are either 8 (4-4) on the back of the unit, or 5 hammers on the side. The pendulum length in this series is all 116cm, measured from the top of the movement and all the way down to the bottom of the pendulum nuts rating threads. The movements hand shaft is Either 36mm or 56mm from the front plate all the way out to the very end of the minute hand nut threads.
Two Weight and One Weight
PS and PSO is a compact cable driven unit with two weights, one for the time and one for the gong strike. This PS or PSO Kieninger clock movement will have only one hammer on it for the gong strike. The movement comes with the leader, suspension spring, hand nut, cables and pulleys. The movement your replacing may have a date code, and then will have PS or PSO stamped on the back plate and then a CM number. Such as 80 PS 65CM
PS and PSO is a compact cable driven unit with two weights, one for the time and one for the BimBam strike. This PS or PSO Kieninger clock movement will have 3 hammers on it for the BimBam strike. The movement comes with the leader, suspension spring, hand nut, cables and pulleys. The movement your replacing may have a date code, and then will have PS or PSO stamped on the back plate and then a CM number. Such as 80 PS 65CM
These Westminster chime, one weight and two spring RWS wall clock units usually have 8 (4+4) hammers on the back unless its side strike, if side it will have 5 hammers on the side. The CM number will be stamped on the unit such as 81 R 65cm or 80 RWS 80cm. That first number is the date of manufacture, the R is the series, and the CM is the pendulum length from the top of the movement and down.
Spring Driven Units
Westminster chime with 5 hammers below the movement, spring driven, has a balance escapement rather than the pendulum. The movement may have AEL01 or AEL02 or AEL12 on the back of it, but there all the same AEL movement. The other numbers are only the production run codes. The movement has a 32mm hand shaft length from the front plate of the movement all the way out to the end of the minute hand nut threads. The price is $299.
The APL is similar to the AEL units but is a pendulum unit instead of balance wheel. The movement also has two different hand shaft options, this again is measured from the front plate all the way out in mm. Since this is a pendulum unit there will be a CM mark on the back of the old unit to match up with the options below.
This is the triple chime spring driven series with a balance escapement. The movement comes in two different hand shaft lengths, this is measured in mm from the front plate of the movement all the way out.
The SPS Kieninger clock movement is a Westminster chime, spring driven, pendulum unit. It has a 36mm hand shaft length from the front plate of the movement and all the way out to the end of the minute hand nut threads. The price on this one is $279.
This is the 9 bell set that maybe needed for the RWU or the KSU 9 bell top movements. They are sold separate from the movement as they are expensive and not always needed if just replacing an old unit. $325.
*J Balance Movement Note
The J series movements can be problematic. If you order the J series please be advised that you may have to wind the movement two times in a 8 day period rather than once. Also there is a plastic cover over the platform balance versions, this plastic is always cracked by the time it gets to the customer and is common to remove this cover all together. Just consider it a protective cover for the balance during the shipping process and discard it. The plastic cover is not considered a warranty item as its only to protect the balance during shipping as stated.
The new Kieninger AEL12 movement replaces the AEL01 and AEL02. It's platform is redesigned with a material that is 10 times harder than the original plastic used. This is the 8 day Westminster chime platform balance movement that Howard Miller has been using since 1995. Many are replacing the balance platforms on the older units. We are offering a new movement with the redesigned platform because the new balances are not yet available separate from the movement. In addition, we offer a 3 year warranty on the movement, a 5 year warranty on the balance, and should the balance ever fail beyond the 5 year period, the opportunity to purchase the replacement balance. You will also be very pleased with the timekeeping with a rate of 18,00 bph. It now has removable winding arbors, bushings in the second wheels, and double clicks for safety.The movement also now has removable winding arbors as well as the double clock safety winding system. Note that it also interchanges with the Hermle 340-020 unit.
