Hello. I just received a Seth Thomas Wharton 8 day moon dial mantle clock from my father. He had it for a good 60 years. At first, it would not run. I ran the minute hand through about 24 hours (pausing for the chimes) and then it ran for a few days. From what I’m reading, it appears that this movement may be too old to warrant cleaning or fixing. Would that be your assessment? Is this movement (A401-004) readily available? Thank you. Steve
The new unit is best, that unit is a 340-020 with a ST number on it instead. These are 25 year units at best, yours is 40.

I have a Ridgeway manufactured in 1987 with clock mechanism 451-033, 114cm, 80. Chimes do not ring. Use to get at least one tone on the quarters, now nothing. Everything else works. Any ideas as to what I might need to look at? Thank you.
These are 25 year units, 30 years at best, the chime train takes the heaviest weight and wears fastest. With this said please order the new 451-033 114cm from this link

Thank you. I will look into doing that.
Hi. I read somewhere that clock gears should not be oiled, particularly if brass. I have a Hermle spring clock that stops after a few minutes. I’ve cleaned it and oiled the spindles but not the gears. Could dry gears be the culprit? Thanks.
The gears do not get oiled this is correct. But what does get oiled is the pinions, and thus the gears sort of take care of themselves as a result. The movement most likely needs bushings, if its Hermle it is best just to swap for the new one. What are the movement numbers off of the back plate?

I entered wrong emAil so I am reposting. What areas on a grandfather clock do you repair. I have looked at the topics on your ebook but not sure it covers this. Thank you
We restore grandfather clocks yes. All of them from the oldest to the newest, the smallest to the largest. If needing assistance please email some pics of the clock and movement to us with your questions to clockworks@clockworks.com
James
How do you oil a grandfather clock without disassembling. What areas do you oil
The smallest drop where ever one thing rubs or spins against another thing is fine.

Thanks. I’ve read that, in general, gears shouldn’t be oiled, particularly brass ones. I have a newly cleaned Hermle movement that stops after a few minutes, with oiled plate holes but no oil on gears. Could dry gears be the culprit?
It most likely needs bushings. Best to get the new one because it is still made and the price is not bad. If oiling, you oil the pinion only and thus the gears just take care of themselves with the same oil, it does not take much.

Have a New England Grand Father clock with Hermle 1161-853-AS movement. The clock works fine but does not chime. Center weight moves down when operating but the other weights do not move. Have tried all 3 chimes songs with no success. Am I missing something?
Is the chime selector on chime Is the auto night selector on daytime Is the cable overlapped on the drum preventing it from getting the full weight amount Is the hammers hitting anything in its path when they move or the back of the case Is the heaviest weight on the your right as you face the clock Is the cable rubbing the seat board or pinched between the movement and seat board Is the chime selector drum unit jammed on the hammers trying to go up – move all the chime hammers back at once to release the roll pin drum to move where it wants and it will be fixed

Thank you !
