When replacing the QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement, you will need to measure the post on the old unit to match it with your new chiming quartz movement. The post goes through the dial (face) and mounts from the front.

Removing a Bad Unit
The first step to replacing a quartz movement is accessing the movement from both the back and the front where the hands are.
1. Getting to the dial
There are various case designs and styles, and accessing the dial (face) of the clock can vary. Sometimes it is easy, while other times, the dial has a glass covering it. You may need to figure out how the clock case was put together to take it apart enough to reach the dial.
2. Removing the hands
If there is a second hand, grab it with your thumbnails and pull it straight off. The minute hand can be held down either by a nut or friction. For the friction fit, just pull it off. For the nut style, hold the minute hand still while turning the nut to the left with needle-nose pliers to loosen it.
3. Removing the hex nut
Use needle-nose pliers to turn the hex nut to the left, so you can unscrew it with your fingers. Once the hex nut is off, the quartz clock movement will fall out of the back of the dial (face).
Quartz Movement Assembly
- Place hanger on post (optional)
- Place black washer on post (optional)
- Put the post through the clock dial face
- Slide the brass washer onto the post sticking out of the clock dial face
- Tighten the hex nut to hold the movement to the back of the clock face using needle-nose pliers if needed. Do not overtighten.
- Push the hour hand onto the post. This is a friction fit and should be pushed down without touching the clock face.
- Put the minute hand on the post
- If using a second hand, screw the small donut on top of the minute hand and then push the second hand onto the pin in the center of the unit. If not, screw the cap nut on. You are done.
Movement information
This QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement is a four-melody chime unit. It also has an overnight automatic shut-off option. The pendulum, clock hands, and the second hand are all sold separately.
Congratulations on the purchase of our new QUAD quartz movement. These are backed by our one-year warranty. With their amazing Tubular Chime sound, these movements should provide years of worry-free performance. This unit has premium sound quality and takes two C-cell batteries. The speaker is on a wire so it can be mounted anywhere in the clock case with two wood screws.
Try out our chime samples here:
Chime Selects
This movement has a chime select switch on the front. Choose between Westminster, Ave Maria, Bim Bam, or Beethoven chimes. There is also a switch to turn the chimes off and a volume control. The speaker is mounted remotely with a wire, and the volume can be controlled.
The sound is excellent, with a full bass sound similar to the old school. It will be the best sound you can get out of any chiming quartz clock movement.

How do you set the time
Instructions for the QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement
Connect the speaker to the movement
Rotate handshaft clockwise until you hear a faint click sound. Insert hands at 5:00
Insert the proper C cell batteries into the movement. Note that the positive end of the battery faces downward.
Double check to see that the hands are at the 5:00 position. Press the gray RESET button at the bottom of the back side of the movement. This will set the electronic strike to 5:00AM. Rotate hands to 6:00 and note that it will strike 6 times. If everything is correct advance the hands to the correct time.
Choose the melody in which you wish the movement to play. Note when in the 4×4 mode it will chime on the quarter and half hours as well as on the hour.
When in the 4×4 mode, it may take a complete hour to correct itself after the time set knob is turned to the correct hour. This is completely normal.
If you desire that the sound be shut off at night while asleep, set the sound lever, which is on the back right hand side, to PM 11:00-AM 5:45 Night off. This will be the auto night shut off mode and will shut the chimes off between 11 and 5:45AM. If you wish to have it strike all 24 hours, move lever to the 24 HR mode.
The monitor button is to demonstrate the hourly chime.
The SET button is to advance the strike one hour. This will not move the hands
Very Important! Never turn the hands backwards. If setting the time from the back of the clock, turn the time set knob on the back of the movement Counter Clockwise only, if setting the clock from the front, turn hands Clockwise only

Very unusual for a quartz clock to run too slow or fast. Please be sure the battery is good and no one is adjusting it when your not looking. Please let me know if this is true and I will send a replacement if so

I followed set up instructions for the qu40 and the chime isn’t working. Also, there are no screw holes to mount the speaker.
Sticky double sided tape works well.
Turn the volume all the way up, be sure it is not on silent, all three batteries are good. Be sure the clock is not set to night silence and it thinks day is night, just turn off the feature to test.

The Hermle quartz hands will not work on any other quartz clock movement besides Hermle, and Hermle is no longer made in quartz. So need the new hands for the new movement

How do I set our Premium Chime Clock Movement QU40 back for daylight savings time?
How to make the clock chime correctly.
First we need to know, the clock chime is correct no matter what it says the chime is, its right. We only need to have the hands point to where the clock thinks it is, or where its chiming in other words. And then set the clock to time. So to point the hands to where the clock chimed we need to remove the hands, and put them back on the clock where the clock chimed. In other words if it chimed out that its 3 o’clock, put the hour hand to the three and the minute hand to the twelve. IF the clock minute hand will not point exactly to the twelve, do this. Find the circle spinning setting knob on the back of the movement and hold this still with your fingers so it will not move. At the same time you stop this from moving, point the minute hand to the twelve where it was supposed to point to when it chimed. Let go of both

Many people request a quartz movement that they want to replace and give the numbers off of the movement wanting to match it up with the exact same unit. This unfortunately is not how replacing a quartz movement goes, unless you are replacing a Hermle chiming movement. You can tell if your clock is a Hermle chiming movement because it will take two C cell batteries and it will have the numbers similar to 2215 or 2114. So if the clock is not made by Hermle and you still want to replace it then you would need to match the movement up by what functions the clock has instead of going by the numbers. There are so many different manufacturers of quartz movements and there are so many made, it is impossible for us to have a reference of them all.

What is the distance from the front face to the pendulum? Or how far from the mounted surface to the pendulum?
Also, will this unit handle five inch hands?
The bottom of the pendulum hanger is about 2 inches down from the hand shaft. The pendulum is 16 inch at its longest, but can be shortened to whatever. Yes it can take 5 inch hands

What Qu40 quartz movement kit do I need to convert My Seth Thomas 120 movement Mantel Clock to the battery operated clock. I would like to order this if possible. Thanks, Jerry.
I believe the Seth Thomas 120 movement dates to about 1920 and would definitely be worth restoring the movement. This generally involves disassembling, adding some bushings, polishing some teeth on wheels if needed, lubricating and reassembling. I am certain Jim would do a great job and you would have an authentic vintage Seth Thomas – an American company that dates back to the 1700s!
Not easy. Would need to drill the dial center hole wider to take a 3/8 post, the post could stick out too far to shut the convex glass and so forth.
That is a higher value movement. Are you interested in our restoration service ?

Further to my question, I have an original Sessions Ramona clock the works of which are gone and have been replaced with a simple AA battery quartz drive, and the pendulum just sits fixed to the case. So I would like to improve it, with a pendulum drive and appropriate chimes.

I purchased and installed the chime-pendulum clock movement. The clock movement is working just fine. However, after working well for several weeks the pendulum stopped working. The clock is level side to side and front to back. Of possible, please suggest what I can do to get it to work.
Make sure the batteries are good and strong, the pendulum is not rubbing the wall or anything else also. The unit should be close to level within the clock

I have a Waltham 30 day wind Vienna regulator wall clock in which I want to replace the works with a battery operated works. The location where the clock is located is not an easy access to be wound (even if it is only thirty days!) and so I’m thinking battery operated is the way to go, The lyre pendulum that I believe is original to the clock weighs about 7.2 oz. Will the original pendulum work with these works or will I need to also order they heavy duty pendulum drive? Thanks so much for your help.
It will come with a pendulum if you order it as such. Best to get the pendulum we offer with the movement to be sure. This way if yours does not work on it you can use the one shipped

Update. I confirmed that the illustration above is accurate in that the photodiode of the clockworks does need to be exposed to light in order to chime during the night. I confirmed this by 1) shining a small flashlight on the photodiode during the night, and 2) covering the photodiode during the day. In the first case, the clock chimed during the night. In the second case, the clock did not chime at all.
Is there a work around the bypass the photodiode?
Thank you,
Joe Knight
There is not. If there is no light, there is no sound.

I’m interested in the QU40 movement, however my pendulum is 24 inches. It’s a Powel Westminster Quartz clock, second hand and pendulum so figuring the QU40 a good replacement. It not this QU 40, do you have another suggestion for replacement??
If the pendulum is very light it will work maybe. Typically it takes a light 16 inch pendulum. If its too heavy it is needed to get the heavy duty pendulum drive also, and this would mount separate in the case behind the movement. This link

How far from center, on each side, does the pendulum swing?
It depends on the length of the pendulum rod, and this is variable depending on what length it is cut by you.
It is 16inches at longest but can be cut to whatever length shorter as described here https://www.clockworks.com/product/quartz-clock-pendulum-bob
It also depends on bob diameter chosen
If the swing ends up being to wide it is possible to put some duct tape over the magnet too lessen the strength and thus the swing.

1/4 he chime doesn’t work after changing batteries
How do I get the quarter hour chimes to work
Premium Chime Clock Movement QU40 Instructions
1. Connect the speaker to the movement 2. Rotate handshaft clockwise until you hear a faint click sound. Then install hands at 5:00 3. Insert the proper C-cell batteries into the movement. Note that the positive end of the battery faces downward.
4. Double check to see that the hands are at the 5:00 position. Then press the gray RESET button at the bottom of the back side of the movement.
This will set the electronic strike to 5:00AM. Rotate hands to 6:00 and note that it will strike 6 times. If everything is correct advance the hands to the correct time.
5. Next, choose the melody in which you wish the movement to play. Note when in the 4×4 mode it will chime on the quarter and half hours as well as on the hour.
6. When in the 4×4 mode, it may take a complete hour to correct itself after the time set knob is turned to the correct hour. However this is completely normal.
7. For night chime silence, set the sound lever located on the back right hand side to PM 11:00-AM 5:45 Night off. This will be the auto night shut off mode and will shut the chimes off between 11 and 5:45AM. For 24 hours, move lever to the 24HR mode.
8. The MONITOR button is used to demonstrate the hourly chime.
9. The SET button is used to advance the strike one hour. However, this will not move the hands 10. Very Important! Never turn the hands backwards. If setting the time from the back of the clock, turn the time set knob on the back of the movement so the hands move Clockwise only. Likewise, if setting the clock from the front, turn hands Clockwise only.
I had to reset my time a couple of times, mostly because it was off just a bit. The instructions are OK for the initial setup, but unnecessary for any adjustment to ensure the chime started exactly on the hour. I followed the instructions but I could never get it quite exactly where I wanted it. The chime was always a few seconds late or early. So, I simply moved the clock ahead to just before 5, and with the battery already installed, waited until the second hand hit 12. I hit the reset button and then moved the time to the correct time. This method works perfectly and you don’t have to remove the hands, and turn it back until it clicks and then hit the reset.
That is great to know, I do appreciate the feed back
James
Can this movement drive a remote pendulum? Movement #QU40 Chime Pendulum Clock Movement. If not, do you recommennd one that can with chimes.
Thank You
The QU40 comes with a 16 inch pendulum rod – if that length is not needed, it is segmented every inch so you can measure the length you need, bend it and snap it off.
Let me Clarify – The pendulum in the clock I am working on is not in the same plain as the movement so it has a remote module that plugs into the main movement. There is about a two inch different from the face of the clock to the location where the pendulum connects to the pendulum drive module (similar to your Heavy Duty Pendulum Drive)
Oh ok – so we have a pendulum drive that is designed just to run a pendulum and is capable of handling a large lyre pendulum.
If you want the clock to chime then there are non-pendulum movements that you can get in conjunction with the pendulum drive.
All of these items and hands can be found at this link: https://www.clockworks.com/clock-movement/chiming-pendulum-quartz-clock-movements.html
Thank you. Going to try one last thing to make the one I have work, if it doesn’t I will be ordering new ones from your shop. I usually only work on mechanical clocks so this is new territory for me.
Thank you for the help.
