Chiming quartz clock movement with the best sound by clockworks.com

When replacing the QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement, you will need to measure the post on the old unit to match it with your new chiming quartz movement. The post goes through the dial (face) and mounts from the front.

Removing a Bad Unit

The first step to replacing a quartz movement is accessing the movement from both the back and the front where the hands are.

1. Getting to the dial

There are various case designs and styles, and accessing the dial (face) of the clock can vary. Sometimes it is easy, while other times, the dial has a glass covering it. You may need to figure out how the clock case was put together to take it apart enough to reach the dial.

2. Removing the hands

If there is a second hand, grab it with your thumbnails and pull it straight off. The minute hand can be held down either by a nut or friction. For the friction fit, just pull it off. For the nut style, hold the minute hand still while turning the nut to the left with needle-nose pliers to loosen it.

3. Removing the hex nut

Use needle-nose pliers to turn the hex nut to the left, so you can unscrew it with your fingers. Once the hex nut is off, the quartz clock movement will fall out of the back of the dial (face).

Quartz Movement Assembly

  1. Place hanger on post (optional)
  2. Place black washer on post (optional)
  3. Put the post through the clock dial face
  4. Slide the brass washer onto the post sticking out of the clock dial face
  5. Tighten the hex nut to hold the movement to the back of the clock face using needle-nose pliers if needed. Do not overtighten.
  6. Push the hour hand onto the post. This is a friction fit and should be pushed down without touching the clock face.
  7. Put the minute hand on the post
  8. If using a second hand, screw the small donut on top of the minute hand and then push the second hand onto the pin in the center of the unit. If not, screw the cap nut on. You are done.

I have a thin metal clock face. You state I should order the 3/16″ size post, but you only carry the 5/1″ post. What can I do? The clock has a slightly curved glass face.

I just received my Premium Chime Clock Movement QU40. There is a holder for an AA battery which is not shown in your clock description and installation instructions. What is the AA battery for? My order number is 338191.

What is the distance from the front face to the pendulum? Or how far from the mounted surface to the pendulum?
Also, will this unit handle five inch hands?

What Qu40 quartz movement kit do I need to convert My Seth Thomas 120 movement Mantel Clock to the battery operated clock. I would like to order this if possible. Thanks, Jerry.

Reply to  JERRY L RAINES

I believe the Seth Thomas 120 movement dates to about 1920 and would definitely be worth restoring the movement. This generally involves disassembling, adding some bushings, polishing some teeth on wheels if needed, lubricating and reassembling. I am certain Jim would do a great job and you would have an authentic vintage Seth Thomas – an American company that dates back to the 1700s!

I want to convert My Seth Thomas 120 movement Mantel Clock to a Qu40 quartz movement. Do you have one that would work? Thanks, Jerry.

Further to my question, I have an original Sessions Ramona clock the works of which are gone and have been replaced with a simple AA battery quartz drive, and the pendulum just sits fixed to the case. So I would like to improve it, with a pendulum drive and appropriate chimes.

Tony Broad

Is their an electronic clockworks that emulates the 1905 Sessions Ramona clock, which I understand had a bell that is struck on the half hour and a coil chime that was struck for the hours?

I purchased and installed the chime-pendulum clock movement. The clock movement is working just fine. However, after working well for several weeks the pendulum stopped working. The clock is level side to side and front to back. Of possible, please suggest what I can do to get it to work.

I have a Waltham 30 day wind Vienna regulator wall clock in which I want to replace the works with a battery operated works. The location where the clock is located is not an easy access to be wound (even if it is only thirty days!) and so I’m thinking battery operated is the way to go, The lyre pendulum that I believe is original to the clock weighs about 7.2 oz. Will the original pendulum work with these works or will I need to also order they heavy duty pendulum drive? Thanks so much for your help.

On the Chime Options switch, what does CDS stand for? The illustration about says “24 hour if there is light”. How do I set the clock to strike all the time?

Joe Knight
Joe Knight

Update. I confirmed that the illustration above is accurate in that the photodiode of the clockworks does need to be exposed to light in order to chime during the night. I confirmed this by 1) shining a small flashlight on the photodiode during the night, and 2) covering the photodiode during the day. In the first case, the clock chimed during the night. In the second case, the clock did not chime at all.

Is there a work around the bypass the photodiode?

Thank you,
Joe Knight

I had to reset my time a couple of times, mostly because it was off just a bit. The instructions are OK for the initial setup, but unnecessary for any adjustment to ensure the chime started exactly on the hour. I followed the instructions but I could never get it quite exactly where I wanted it. The chime was always a few seconds late or early. So, I simply moved the clock ahead to just before 5, and with the battery already installed, waited until the second hand hit 12. I hit the reset button and then moved the time to the correct time. This method works perfectly and you don’t have to remove the hands, and turn it back until it clicks and then hit the reset.

Can this movement drive a remote pendulum? Movement #QU40 Chime Pendulum Clock Movement. If not, do you recommennd one that can with chimes.

Thank You

Let me Clarify – The pendulum in the clock I am working on is not in the same plain as the movement so it has a remote module that plugs into the main movement. There is about a two inch different from the face of the clock to the location where the pendulum connects to the pendulum drive module (similar to your Heavy Duty Pendulum Drive)

Thank you. Going to try one last thing to make the one I have work, if it doesn’t I will be ordering new ones from your shop. I usually only work on mechanical clocks so this is new territory for me.

Thank you for the help.
