1. Where to Start When Dating an Antique Seth Thomas Clock?

Begin by examining the physical aspects of your clock. Specific features and markings can help determine its age:

  1. The Label or Stamp: Check the back of the clock, inside the case, or on the clock face for labels or stamps. Many antique Seth Thomas clocks have a paper label glued inside the case, often including a manufacturing date or model number.
  2. The Movement: Inspect the clock movement. Antique Seth Thomas movements are typically stamped with serial numbers, manufacturing dates, or the company’s logo.
  3. The Clock Case: The case style and materials provide important clues:
    • Wooden gear movements date from 1813 to 1842.
    • Brass movements became standard after 1850.
    • Adamantine veneer clocks, which mimic marble, were popular in the late 19th century.

2. How to Use the Movement’s Serial Numbers or Stamps

Seth Thomas often stamped movement plates with date codes or model numbers. Here’s how to decode them:

  • Date Codes: Many early 20th-century movements feature a date code. For instance, a stamp like “A-09” may indicate a manufacture date of January 1909.
  • Model Numbers: Some antique clocks have model numbers that correspond to specific production periods. Reference old clock catalogs for verification.

If you’re unsure, Clockworks offers clock repair and restoration services to analyze your clock’s movement and determine its age.

3. Identifying the Clock’s Style and Materials

Seth Thomas produced various clock styles across different periods. Identifying these styles helps date your antique clock:

  1. Wooden Gear Clocks (1813–1842): Early models with wooden movements, tall cases, and simple designs.
  2. Wall/Mantel Clocks (1850–1900): Featured brass movements and ornate wooden cases, sometimes with inlays or carvings.
  3. Adamantine Clocks (1880–1910): A durable veneer designed to mimic marble, available in black, white, and vibrant colors.
  4. Regulator Clocks (1860–1920): Common in schools and offices, featuring long pendulums and precise mechanisms.

4. Using Catalogs and Reference Guides

Seth Thomas catalogs showcased their designs and are valuable resources for identifying production dates. Compare your clock to catalog images for a closer match.

Reference books can also help:

  • “Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements” by Tran Duy Ly.
  • “American Clocks, Volume 2” by Kenneth Roberts.

5. Case Construction as a Dating Method

Analyzing the construction of your clock’s case can help determine its age:

  • Joinery: Early 19th-century clocks often used dovetail joints and other handcrafted techniques.
  • Glass: Older clocks may have hand-blown glass with slight imperfections, while later clocks feature machine-made glass.
  • Finishes: Shellac and varnish were common in the 19th century, with synthetic finishes appearing in the 20th century.

If you need case restoration, Clockworks carries a selection of bezels and glass.

Can i please get some help on a wall clock I found in my parents house. What does a stamped number “440” on the brass internal part of a seth thomas clock mean? The clock is a wood octagonal wall clock with 2 winding slots – one for time and the other for the day of month. I understand it could be a movement number, but also have come to find that seth thomas did not have a 440 movement number ever manufactured. Please assist if you can. Just trying to understand if this clock is worth anything other than a nostalgic heirloom.

The “440” stamp on your Seth Thomas brass movement is almost certainly a worn or stamped 44Q (the “Q” can look like a “0” due to age/imperfect stamping). This was a large 8-day movement made for calendar clocks, with separate winding for time and the date/day mechanism—exactly matching your wood octagonal wall clock with two winding holes.

Where would we find the 0 replacement for the number 10 on our Seth Thomas grandfather clock

It is a tricky endeavor to get the right numeral to match the old ones. There are so many various companies that made dials and different companies that made numerals. Nothing very consistent between them all.

However if you would like to give it a shot, we sell the entire set of numerals for a good price.

We have the thin gold tone aluminum ones for GF clocks along with GM clocks at this link

Gold stick plastic numerals in Arabic this link

Same in Roman =

Any of the above options would require a tiniest drop of clear epoxy that is available at this link
https://www.clockworks.com/product/cuckoo-repair-clear-epoxy
Please note it does not dry very clear, put only a tiny drop and spread it on the back of the numeral.

Or it is possible just to order the entire dial / face

We can narrow down what dial fits if a pic of the old dial along with measurements are provided

Hello,

I have a Seth Thomas Office Calendar #2. It runs exceptionally well and is very accurate. It was given to me by my grandfather about 60 years ago. All the research I have done over the years can be seen here along with many photos:

http://www.daveandrhonda.com/clock/clock.html

The lower calendar mechanism is the Mix Brothers original version with two separate rods controlling it. The upper movement has no name, numbers or stamp of any kind. Please look at the web page above and let me know if the upper clock movement is the original one or a replacement. If it is a replacement, it would have been more than 60 years ago.

I have never had any professional maintenance done on this clock. Should I send it to you for a complete overhaul?

We can take care of the servicing of the movement and or the calendar unit as well. However the removal and installation is on your end as we would not want the clock case shipped.

If it comes down to it we can assist with install if there are any road blocks with a zoom support call.

Interested in sending the movement in for service?

What are the numbers off of the back plate of the clock movement itself? If it is hard to get to, usually you can stick a cell phone up behind the movement and get a picture of the numbers. Or through the side access panel if there is one.

Not off the paper work, not off the wooden case, but the movement stamp itself

My Queen Anne Seth Thomas wall clock has a paten dat of Dec. 28, 1875. I have cleaned it up and it is running but when the hourly chimes go off there is a chatering sound being made by a steel wire that has something to do with chime side of the clock. I do like the wire that comes down that alowes you to activate the chime but that chater is it OK?

Chater is fine, the wire and the arm it is on jumps up and down looking for the deep slot in the count wheel
