How to Install a Cuckoo Clock Chain

Installing a Cuckoo Clock Chain

If a chain comes off a cuckoo clock, reinstalling it onto the ratchet wheel can be tricky. However, you can avoid removing the clock movement entirely by following these steps to put the chain back while keeping the movement inside the clock case.

Step 1: Prepare the Chain

The cuckoo clock chain consists of brass wire links that are curved back onto themselves without any soldering. This means you can open a link easily using two small needle-nose pliers.

  • First, remove the chain hook and ring from the strand before starting. You will reattach them later.
  • If you need a replacement chain, check out Cuckoo Clock Chains at Clockworks.com.
  • For pliers, consider using Precision Needle Nose Pliers.

Step 2: Secure the Other Chains

Cuckoo clocks usually have multiple chains, and turning the case upside down may cause the other chains to slip off their ratchet wheels. To prevent this:

  • Use twist ties or string to secure the other chains tightly to the clock case. This keeps them in place while you work on the chain that needs to be reinstalled.

Step 3: Position the Clock

  • Carefully turn the cuckoo clock upside down while ensuring the secured chains stay in place.
  • This positioning allows you to work with the chain hole and ratchet wheel more effectively.

Step 4: Thread the Chain Onto the Ratchet Wheel

Now, follow these steps to get the chain back on the ratchet wheel:

  • Insert a long, skinny flathead screwdriver into the case’s chain hole and gently spin the ratchet wheel.
  • Observe which direction it spins freely.
  • Feed the loose end of the chain into the hole on the side where the ratchet wheel spins.
  • While holding the cuckoo clock in one hand, use the other hand to spin the ratchet wheel, helping the chain feed onto it.

Step 5: Pull the Chain Through

  • Continue ratcheting until the chain appears at the opposite hole of the clock case.
  • Once visible, pull the chain through so that both sides are of equal length.
  • Reattach the hook and ring to the ends of the chain.

After completing these steps, your cuckoo clock chain should be properly reinstalled and ready to function.
