How to Read Ridgeway Clock Serial Numbers

37

Ridgeway clocks have earned a reputation for their quality craftsmanship and timeless designs. One intriguing aspect of owning a Ridgeway clock is discovering its history through the serial number. This number can tell you when the clock was made and, sometimes, even the factory where it was produced. Knowing how to read Ridgeway clock serial numbers can provide valuable insights into your timepiece’s manufacturing date and origin.

Why Serial Numbers Matter

Serial numbers serve as unique identifiers for each clock. For Ridgeway clocks, the serial number reveals the production date and other details. Understanding this information can help you determine the age of your clock, verify its authenticity, and learn more about its history.

Finding the Serial Number on Your Ridgeway Clock

Locating the serial number on your Ridgeway clock is the first step in uncovering its background. You can usually find the serial number in one of these places:

  • On the Back of the Clock: Many Ridgeway clocks have a label or metal plate on the back of the case with the serial number printed or engraved on it.
  • Inside the Clock Case: For some grandfather clocks, the serial number appears on a label inside the clock case, often near the movement.
  • On the Movement: In certain cases, the serial number is engraved directly on the movement itself. You may need to carefully open the clock case to see this number.

Once you’ve found the serial number, you can begin decoding it to learn more about your clock’s origin.

Interpreting Ridgeway Clock Serial Numbers

Ridgeway clock serial numbers can vary depending on the era in which the clock was produced. Here’s how you can interpret these numbers to determine the manufacturing date and origin:

Serial Numbers from the 1960s to 1980s

During this period, Ridgeway serial numbers often consisted of a series of numbers, sometimes followed by a letter. Here’s how to decode them:

  • Year of Manufacture: The first two digits typically represent the year of manufacture. For example, if the serial number starts with “78,” the clock was made in 1978.
  • Production Sequence: The following digits represent the production sequence or model number, helping to identify the specific clock model or batch.
  • Factory Code: A letter at the end of the serial number might indicate the factory or production line.

Example:
Serial Number: 781234A

  • “78” means the clock was made in 1978.
  • “1234” indicates the production sequence number.
  • “A” could signify the factory or production line.
Serial Numbers from the 1990s Onward

In the 1990s and beyond, Ridgeway clocks adopted more complex serial numbers, incorporating letters and digits:

  • Factory or Production Batch: The first two or three characters may represent a code for the factory or production batch.
  • Production Number: The digits following these characters usually indicate the specific production number or model.
  • Date Code: A date code might be embedded within the serial number, representing the year and possibly the month of manufacture.

Example:
Serial Number: RW950123

  • “RW” likely indicates Ridgeway as the brand or the factory code.
  • “95” indicates the clock was made in 1995.
  • “0123” represents the production sequence number.
Modern Ridgeway Clocks

Modern Ridgeway clocks may have a different serial number format, often including a longer string of numbers and letters. To decode these, you might need to consult Ridgeway’s official documentation or contact the manufacturer for specific details.

How Serial Numbers Enhance Your Clock’s Value

Understanding your clock’s serial number can significantly enhance your appreciation and knowledge of your Ridgeway timepiece. By decoding the serial number, you can:

  • Verify Authenticity: Authentic Ridgeway clocks have specific serial number patterns. Identifying these patterns can confirm the clock’s authenticity and ensure it is a genuine Ridgeway product.
  • Assess Value: The age and origin of a clock can impact its value. Older, well-preserved Ridgeway clocks, especially those with unique features or limited production runs, may hold higher value in the market.
  • Plan Maintenance: Knowing your clock’s age can help you plan for maintenance and repairs. Older clocks may require more frequent servicing or specialized care.

Tips for Reading and Verifying Serial Numbers

  • Check for Consistency: Make sure the serial number format matches the expected style for the clock’s era. Inconsistencies could indicate a reproduction or a clock that has been modified.
  • Consult Official Resources: Ridgeway’s official website or customer support can provide assistance if you have difficulty interpreting a serial number. They may have records or additional information about your specific clock.
  • Cross-Reference with Model Numbers: Some Ridgeway clocks have model numbers listed alongside the serial number. Cross-referencing these numbers can help verify the clock’s identity and age.

Maintaining Your Ridgeway Clock

Proper maintenance ensures that your Ridgeway clock continues to function accurately and looks its best. Here are some maintenance tips to keep your clock in optimal condition:

  • Regular Cleaning and Oiling: Dust and grime can affect the movement of your clock. Regular cleaning and oiling help keep the internal mechanisms running smoothly. Use high-quality clock oil and cleaning supplies for the best results.
  • Professional Servicing: Consider professional servicing every few years, especially for older clocks. Clockworks, Inc. offers expert cleaning, oiling, and repair services to maintain your Ridgeway clock’s performance.

James,

I have a nice Ridgeway Model 213, Dial E-3, Movement HL, Serial #61179. I purchased it and was told it worked but did not chime. After looking at it I found that the weights had been overwound to the point they were locked up as far as they would travel. I unhooked them and reset the chans so that they would wind, and also reset the pendulum as it was way off as well. I have it keeping decent time, although after a while it starts to run a few minutes behind, however I cannot get it to chime. It is difficult to ascertain if anything is broken as I have no knowledge of what I am looking at and the manual was long since lost before I took possession of it. I can get it to chime by hand but that is all. You can hear it click and see the mechanism move when it hits the 15 minutes, but nothing happens. I’d love to get it fully working again. Is there anything I should look for or is it a matter of getting it looked at for service and/or repair?

What are the numbers off of the back plate of the clock movement itself? If it is hard to get to, usually you can stick a cell phone up behind the movement and get a picture of the numbers. Or through the side access panel if there is one.

Not off the paper work, not off the wooden case, but the movement stamp itself

The top number is 79 which I assume is the date of manufacture. Under the description and location: 451-053. Under that says 94cm/66.

These are 30 year units. It had a long run, but its time is over, time for the new one.

Please order the 451-053 94cm from this link

The new movement
New clock movement benefits usually do indeed outweigh the repair option. The movement will already have lubrication with clock oil so there is no need to oil it.

The new clock movement comes with cables and pulleys, or chains, the leader, and suspension spring.

This is everything that comes out when you remove the two screws that are under the clock movement, besides the dial and weights.

Once you get the hands and the clock dial out of the way (instructions are sent via email) it’s only a matter of removing the two screws from underneath.

The new clock movement can then be put in by someone with experience in 10 or 15 minutes. A person with no experience will take longer, but the point is that it isn’t hard to do. This is definitely a new clock movement benefit.

There are some instances where a clock case was made in an annoying way that makes it more difficult, but for clock movements that were in a mass production this is not the situation. This relates more to a few individual clockmakers who’s design of the case makes it more tricky to get the new clock movement in or out.

Summary of New Clock Movement Benefits
A new clock movement is typically less than half the cost of an overhaul.

It will also be on its way to the customer instantly instead of months later. A new clock movement will last the longest of any other choice.

Hi, I recently purchased what appears to be a high end RidgeWay Clock. I got it used for a great price. There is one plate that says 0331 and the serial# is 92015681. The face of the clock appears to have finger prints on it that I am not able to remove but it may have been a poor attempt at cleaning with the wrong solution that has damaged the face between the numbers. I have tried to remove smudges/fingerprints but they are not coming off without ruining the entire surface between the numbers. Is it possible to just purchase the circular dial with numbers on them? There appears to be 4 tiny screws that holds the circular plate in place. Would Ridgeway sell this part? According to the serial number I think it was made in 92. Also, do you have any idea how much this is worth. Not that I’m going to sell it but I’m just curious of the value.

Hi, my wife and I recently came across an old ridgeway grandfather clock: serial number 72381, model-132, movement -HL HB, dial E4 (the clock still had its original documents/warranty). The clock unfortunately did not come with a key to the cabinet. Do you have a recommendation for replacement. The clock looks beautiful, but hasn’t had any tlc for a while, so my wife and I are hoping to get it up and working.

Hey James, we bought a Ridgeway Grandfather Clock from a thrift store for $100. There are 2 series of numbers engraved on the movement. They are UW32001 B and 824076. Was wondering if we got a wonderful deal. The clock is beautiful, in working condition and in great shape.
