Removing a Bad Unit
The first step to replacing a quartz movement, is to be able to get to the movement from the back and also the front where the hands are.1. Getting to the dial
There are many case designs and styles and there is no telling what way your clock case is made to get to the dial (face) of the clock. Sometimes it is very easy to get to the dial and hands, other times the dial has a glass covering it. You may find yourself trying to figure out how the clock case was put together, in order to take it apart enough to get to the dial. You may have to remove some screws, or if there is a bezel you may have to bend the bezel tabs a little to get it off. Once you're at the point where you can remove the hands, and also the back of the quartz unit, you're good to start replacing the unit.2. Removing the hands
If there is a second hand on the clock, grab it with your thumb nails and pull straight off of the clock to take it off. There are two styles to the minute hand. One type has the nut holding it down and the other kind has a minute hand only held in place by friction. The second type has a perfectly round hole in the hand in comparison to the oblong hole of the first style. Obviously, the friction fit with no nut style just pulls straight off like the second hand did. The other style (the kind we sell) has the nut on the top of the minute hand to hold it down. To take this off, hold the minute hand still as you turn the nut to the left with needle nose pliers to loosen the nut so you can take it off with your fingers. Next is the hour hand, this is only a friction fit with a round hole in the hand, the tube its on is tapered fatter as it goes down into the movement. Simply twist the hand and pull it toward you until it comes off.3. Removing the hex nut
Then you will see a hex nut (six sided nut). So, use the same needle nose pliers to just turn the hex nut some to the left so you can unscrew it with your fingers. Of course, once the hex nut is off, the quartz clock movement will just fall out of the back side of the dial (face).Quartz Movement Assembly
These are the assembly instructions for the time only quartz clock movement into the clock case.- Place hanger on post (optional)
- Place black washer on post (optional)
- Put post through the clock dial face
- Slide the brass washer onto the post of the movement that is sticking out of the clock dial face
- Put hex nut on post and tighten to hold movement to the back of the clock face – you may use needle nose pliers to get a tighter fit, however do not crank it down so tight that it ruins the clock face.
- Push hour hand on the post (smaller of the 2 hands with round hole). This is a friction fit and should be pushed all the way down on the post without it touching the clock face.
- Put the minute hand on the post
- If using a second hand, skip to step 9. If you are not using a second hand, screw the cap nut on. You are done.
- If using a second hand, screw the small donut on top of minute hand and then push the second hand onto the pin in the center of the unit. You are done installing you're brand new quartz clock movement !
- Volume control
- Supports a 16 inch pendulum or shorter
- AutoNight Silence Switch
- Light sensor for chime off
QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement Notes
Movement
The new QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement has step motion timekeeping accuracy and includes a time setting knob on the back of the unit. The knob on the back is so the time can be set by the back, in case you have the hands not easily accessible from the front. This is a pendulum unit but you can use it with or without the pendulum. The pendulum motion does not have anything to do with the timekeeping on this unit.Sound
This is the only unit with four options for the chime. Choose between Westminster chime on every quarter and then striking out the hour, or choose Westminster or Ave Maria or Bim Bam on the top of the hour only.Hands
Any of the hands we sell for quartz clock movements will fit this unit. As far as the quartz units go, we only have the standard American “I” shaft units and hands. This means the hour hand will have a round hole and the minute hand would have a oblong hole. The hour hand goes on as a friction fit, then the minute hand goes on the upper post with its nut. Use a second hand only if you want to. All hands are sold separately and are offered here as well.Pendulum
This movement supports a pendulum that is 16 inches at its longest length. However you can shorten it to anything less than 16 inches with ease. The pendulum has three bob diameter options to choose from, the bob is the round disk at the bottom of the pendulum rod. Please note although this is a pendulum unit, you can use it with or without the pendulum. If you do not use a pendulum, you can just lock the pendulum swinger to one side and not use it.Mounting Post
The movements threaded post comes in three lengths. This is the fat part with the threads that takes the hex nut. This post length is what we measure, the actual part that the hands go onto sticks out another ¼ inch beyond this measurement, but we do not count that in the measurement. The post lengths available for this unit is either 5/16 long or 7/16 or 11/16 long. The posts are all 5/16 wide, and fit into a ⅜ dial hole.Features of the QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement
- Westminster every quarter, and then strike out the hours
- Or Westminster / Ave Maria / BimBam on the top of the hour only
- Auto Night Silence Option (10pm to 6am)
- Volume Control
- Second Hand Option
- Pendulum Option
- Light sensor auto chime off
- Takes Two C Cell Batteries
Instructions for the QU40 Chime-Pendulum Clock Movement
- Connect the speaker to the movement
- Rotate handshaft clockwise until you hear a faint click sound. Insert hands at 5:00
- Insert the proper C cell batteries into the movement. Note that the positive end of the battery faces downward.
- Double check to see that the hands are at the 5:00 position. Press the gray RESET button at the bottom of the back side of the movement. This will set the electronic strike to 5:00AM. Rotate hands to 6:00 and note that it will strike 6 times. If everything is correct advance the hands to the correct time.
- Choose the melody in which you wish the movement to play. Note when in the 4x4 mode it will chime on the quarter and half hours as well as on the hour.
- When in the 4x4 mode, it may take a complete hour to correct itself after the time set knob is turned to the correct hour. This is completely normal.
- If you desire that the sound be shut off at night while asleep, set the sound lever, which is on the back right hand side, to PM 11:00-AM 5:45 Night off. This will be the auto night shut off mode and will shut the chimes off between 11 and 5:45AM. If you wish to have it strike all 24 hours, move lever to the 24 HR mode.
- The monitor button is to demonstrate the hourly chime.
- The SET button is to advance the strike one hour. This will not move the hands
- Very Important! Never turn the hands backwards. If setting the time from the back of the clock, turn the time set knob on the back of the movement Counter Clockwise only, if setting the clock from the front, turn hands Clockwise only
I have an old E. Ingraham mantel clock manufactured in 1928. I have purchased and installed two of your QU40 quartz movements and love both. I would like to put one in this clock but it measures 15/16″ from inside to clock to face of dial. It seems that only an 11/16″ stem length is available. Do you suppose that somewhere in your spare parts you might have a short piece of a stem that I could epoxy to a new QU40 in order to make a longer stem? I guess it would need to be say 5/16″ or long in order to get a total stem length of 1 1/4″. This would extend the stem 1/4″ beyond the face. If you had a couple of old stems that I could try to cut down, I would attempt this installation. I would appreciate your comments.
Sorry do not. It just will not work out, it must be thinned out to be able to get the post all the way through

I have installed theQU40Premium Quartz Movement. Very accurate chime, but the hands are one or two minutes fast. Can I turn the minute hand BACK to be on the hour if I hold the time setting knob still? A bigger question is how to mount the chime speaker to the case. You suggest sticky tape, but that didn’t”t work longer than a week.I notice that the picture the movement shows the speaker with a lip on each side of the speaker which would permit it to be screwed to the case. But not so with this speaker. Any further suggestions?
Can I turn the minute hand BACK to be on the hour if I hold the time setting knob still? = Yes
Any further suggestions? = stronger sticky tape, or just leave it sitting on any flat surface that maybe inside the clock case

Hi I just replaced my old dead movement with your Premium Chime Clock Movement QU40and it is running well. I used my old pendulum with this, which never had problems, however now the bob is hitting the side of the case. (It is level) What do you suggest to remedy this ? Thank you.
Some have used duct tape on the back side of the pendulum magnet that swings it, to reduce the power

Hi, we’d like to order the Premium Chime Clock Movement QU40 that runs on the 2 C batteries, to fit inside our grandmother clock. We actually purchased this Hermle movement from you guys, a few years ago: 451-050H 94cm but it died. Anyway, I don’t know what size post is necessary. Do you by chance know?
Thanks,
Paul Bukowski
It would be the 5/16 post.
We can help with the mech unit, its too early to declare it dead, we only need to be able to assist

The qu40 movement we have is not chiming the correct hour. what do we do to get the chime to match the hour? We have a Centurion Seth Thomas pendulum clock.
HI
Make the clock chime the hour by moving the hands forward.
Take off the hands
Put the hands back on, at the point the strike dictated
Set to time
IF the minute hand is not exactly on the hour, when it strikes the hour, do this
There is a circle hand setting knob on the back of the movement. Hold this still with your fingers as you turn the minute
hand to where the clock just chimed. Let go. Set to time.

I have used your QU-40 movement before in another project. It has excellent sounding chimes, very easy to install and is very reliable. I’m upgrading another grandfather clock and I want to use the same movement. My dilemma this time is I need at least a 25″ pendulum rod. I can purchase the rod and pendulum from another supplier as I didn’t see where you stocked anything longer than the 16″. Is there a way to use this movement and support a 25″ pendulum? I see where you sell the heavy duty movement for longer hands and pendulums but not with the same chime quality and I don’t want to compromise there. Help….
We offer that unit along with an optional heavy duty pendulum drive at this link

If the exact pendulum is known that is desired, we can help with that also.

Hello, I bought a QU40 Chime Pendulum Clock Movement. Does this movement come with a pendulum as pictured? It doesn’t say that a pendulum is not included anywhere in the description of what’s pictured in the listing. Please let me know, thanks, Larry
Pendulum is a separate purchase

i have installed clock for the QU40 but the pendulum is NOT swinging. What can i do to fix this. Thanks.
Is the clock level front to back?
Is there anything rubbing anywhere?
Is the bob wacking the sides of the clock case?
Is the pendulum in the unlock position?
Please check these things before we call the movement defective

Good morning:
Please, I need a replacement for a Hermle Quartz 2212, I know that this is an old model and have not found in the web.
Could you say me, if it is possible to replace with the model 2214 or 2215 or do you recommend some replacement for the the Hermle Quartz 2212.
Thank you in advance for your help and support.
Hi,
All these in the Hermle quartz clock movement line is obsolete and no longer available. Best to get any quartz movement in its place, with the functions you would like such as chime or not, pendulum or not and so forth.

Many people request a quartz movement that they want to replace and give the numbers off of the movement wanting to match it up with the exact same unit. This unfortunately is not how replacing a quartz movement goes, unless you are replacing a Hermle chiming movement. You can tell if your clock is a Hermle chiming movement because it will take two C cell batteries and it will have the numbers similar to 2215 or 2114. So if the clock is not made by Hermle and you still want to replace it then you would need to match the movement up by what functions the clock has instead of going by the numbers. There are so many different manufacturers of quartz movements and there are so many made, it is impossible for us to have a reference of them all.

How accurate is the QU40? Will it gain or lose time and if so, how much, over a month or year?
It is a quartz clock movement. It is as accurate as any other quartz clock movement, typically dead on every time.

Hello,
I just purchased the QU40 Movement, and was able to install the unit and get it working. However, The 11PM – 5:45AM night mode doesn’t work. It chimes all night long. I have the light sensor positioned so that it should easily detect when the room is light or dark.
Do you have any suggestions to help me get the night mode working?
Thanks!
If the clock movement does not detect light it will not play a chime. Also please check that the 11pm night mode is not turning the chimes off at 11am instead. If so, advance 12 hours. If the unit is defective please send us an email as such to clockworks@clockworks.com

My pendulum is 30 inches long. Can I use the HD Pend with the QU40P-B movement? As I would like to keep the pendulum movement.
Yes it will run it no problem.
James
I have gone to the instructions 4 times, but my chimes go off 1 minute early (QU40). Anything to move the minute hand forward 1 minute.
HI
Make the clock chime the hour by moving the hands forward.
Take off the hands
Put the hands back on, at the point the strike dictated
Set to time

James
How do I attach the speaker to the movement
The speaker for that unit gets mounted to the wood case instead of the movement. Use two wood screws
https://www.clockworks.com/product/clock-500pc-wood-screw-assortment
James
does the quartz conversion come with a warranty my shaft length is 7/8 of a inch long
Yes 3 years.
Shaft is measured by the threaded post only, the part that the hands actually go onto will stick out 1/4 inch more than this measurement.

I received the QU40 movement and trying to decipher the instructions. Step number 2, “Rotate handshaft clockwise…” what is the handshaft? Is it the knob labeled Hand Setting Knob” in the back of the unit? Also, what is the significance of the faint click? If we cannot tell or hear it and move the hands to the 5:00 position and proceed with the balance of steps, what are we supposed to expect?
need replacement light sensor led ware can i get them
What is the distance from the front of the QU40 movement ‘face’ to the front of the pendulum bar? My clock needs at least 1″ to 1.25″ to clear some other obstructions, so if it’s less than that, then I have to order a longer threaded post length and use a spacer between the movement and the clock face. Thanks!
I just got the QU40 working and set, however it does not chime on the quarter hours in 4×4 mode. How do I fix it.
To Whom it may concern; The pendulum on my clock stopped swinging. What do I have to due to get it swinging again?
We will need to know what movement you have.
Please see this link for help finding your movement numbers: https://www.clockworks.com/clock-movement.html
Please email us with questions.
Clockworks@clockworks.com
Thank you !
Here are a couple of things to try: 1. make sure the light sensor is detecting a strong light source.
2. Try toggling the switch on the back of the movement from the 4×4 position to another one and then back to the 4×4 (just in case the movement is stuck in between 2 settings).
If neither one of these things help, send us an email ( clockworks@clockworks.com) or pop onto our chat system and let us know your name and order number and we can get a replacement out to you.
Thank you !
My QU40’s batteries slowly died. Now it’s chiming one hour short (so 7 chimes at 8.00pm). How can I reset this?
Just point the hour hand to whatever time it struck out, then set to time with the minute hand by going forward
Thank you !
My hour and minute hands move together, so will it be OK to ‘lock’ the hour hand while moving the minute hand?
With one hand, hold the setting knob, on the back of movement, still, while you use the other hand to gently turn the minute hand to the proper position.
Thank you !
My pendulum doesn’t swing.
my pendulum also stopped swinging
Hi
Quartz movement no swing on the pendulum, please check the following.
Is the clock level front to back?
Is there anything rubbing anywhere?
Is the bob wacking the sides of the clock case?
Is the pendulum in the unlock position?
Please check these things before we call the movement defective

Is there an adjustment so the pendulum won’t hit the sides of the case?
Some people claim to use duct tape over the magnet to slow the swing
or a smaller pendulum bob diameter
James
Thank you !
Chime modes: PM11:00-AM5:45 is clear. I assume Night Off uses the light sensor. What does CDS mean? Thanks.
CDS is the 24hour mode, however if the light sensor does not detect a light source, the movement will not chime.
Can I use my own Pendulum it is about 30 inches long and the bob is not heavy?
That will not be a good idea. The pendulums that come with the quartz movements are made to use with them. You can purchase a pendulum hanger for longer sizes here.
https://www.clockworks.com/product/heavy-duty-clock-pendulum-drive
can the light sensor be turned off so it will chime at night in the dark. I am putting this a brass 6″ clock ( Schatz sea quartz)
The unit will not and cannot make noise unless it sees light. Sorry
Many Thanks !

The CDS mode on this clock movement has the chime not working due to a light sensor feature. Can this feature be disabled to run 24 hours straight through for I only get the chimes to work on the night mode only.
Mine stopped working at all. The light sensor fell off. I thought seeing it was broken anyway I stripped the 2 wires a little and twisted them together and put some black tape on them. I now chimes like it should!!
Great Job
James
Do you have QU40 westminister chime clock motherboard (circuit Board) – 2 ea. If you have seperate please inform us. Thank you.
Hi, We have only the QU40 movements. They are self contained. No separate circuit boards. Here is the link https://www.clockworks.com/product/qu40np-chime-quartz-clock-movement
I need a dial 7 1/2″ square dial, do you carry that? Also my pendulum calls for 8 3/4 length with a 2 3/4 bob is the shaft adjustable or a fixed length?
