Regula Cuckoo Movement Identification
Most cuckoo clocks made after 1950 have movements that are made by the Regula cuckoo clock movement company. Any cuckoo clock made after this time has an 80 percent chance of being a Regula.
Most of the time there will be identification markings that will reveal if it is a Regula cuckoo clock movement. But to be certain use these methods for identification.
Regula Cuckoo Conversions
Here are some common measurements conversions for the pendulum length. The pendulum on a Regula cuckoo is from the top of the movement to the center of the leaf. The movement will be stamped with this number usually. It will have a stamp with a CM length usually on the left side of the back plate.
- 19.5cm = 7 3/4 Drop
- 23.5cm = 9 1/4 Drop
- 28.5cm = 10 1/2 Drop
- 40cm = 15 3/4 Drop
Two train or three train movements
If the clock has two weights that run the movement, identifying it as a Regula is simple. When we say two weights, it means on the movement only.
There may be three weights on the clock, but only two weights are on the movement itself. In other words, there are three train movements that take three weights. A three train movement would have three weights on the movement itself.
However, we are talking about two weights on the movement regardless if the clock has three weights on it. One could be for the music box. This is separate from the movement itself. If the movement alone takes two weights, we call this a two train movement.
This means the movement has two sides of gears from big to little inside the plates. One for the cuckoo and one for the time. If the clock movement itself takes three weights, this of course is a three train movement.
Two train, two weight Regula Identification
See if the cuckoo movement says 25 or 34 on it. This would be above the wheel with the spikes that make the bellows go up and down. Above this wheel and to the right a little, there will be numbers that are in a stamp right in the brass.
It may have more numbers or letters after the 25 or 34 but don’t pay attention to anything but the 25 or 34 for now. The 25 means it is a one day clock that takes two weights. A 34 means it is an eight day clock movement that runs on two weights.
Both of these are the most common cuckoo clock movements made in the world. The 25 or 34 identification stamp alone means it was made by the Regula factory in Germany.
The two styles of the two weight movements
The two train, two weight movements come in two styles. One with a dancer platform and one without the dancer platform. Keep in mind just because there are dancers on the cuckoo clock, it does not mean there is an attachment. This is an important distinction when ordering a new cuckoo clock movement.
The two weight cuckoo movements with the dancer platform comes with the platform already on it. The platform is available in a few heights. This measurement, or height, needs to be known if purchasing a new movement. The dancer platform height is the distance from the top of the movement to the platform base itself.
The clock may say 25 on it for one day and 34 for an eight day. However, with these same identification marks
they have either the platform or no platform. Therefore, these same numbers may be on the movement regardless
if there are dancers or not.
To sum Up
- Figure out if it is a 2 or 3 train movement
- Determine if there is a a dancer platform and if so, is it already on the movement itself.
- On the brass back plate look for identification markings of a 25 or 34
- Order the dancer or non dancer Regula in the 25 for a one day or a 34 for an eight day movement
Hi James, I’ve got a Black Forest cuckoo clock with a Regula movement, manufactured by Schmeckenbecher. It’s a two-weight movement, Made in Germany, stamped with a 24, not a 25 or 34 — clearly 24. I see no single alphebetic letter. G.M. 1704075, 1705294, 1649000, 1674539 are stamped along the right side of the movement. Can you assist me with trying to determine the date of the clock?
Made after 1950 and before 1980 about.

Hi James. Here’s one I can’t seem to find any information on. Found in an attic is a Black Forest cucoo clock. The back of the movement says E. Schmeckenbecher GM 1884288 1892176 Made in West Germany and there is also a 25 stamped on it. The chains are decorative as they are attached to the wood and the weights are hollow plastic. There is a motor in the back which takes a D cell battery. It must be spring wound as the pendulum moves without the weight. It needs maintenance and I cant find any information on a Regula that takes a battery and also says “25” on it. Any info is greatly appreciated!
Sorry but we only work with the mechanical versions of cuckoo clocks

Tricky, do not have it. There is no harm in putting it on the wall with out it, just will lose the gong strike after the cuckoo call

Hello,I have a 3 weight clock and I may need to replace mechanism. Stamped on brass is G.M. 1884288 and 1892176 along with “made in west Germany” and A25-82. Which do I need to order? 2 weights in the works and the 3rd weight off to the side to run a music box movement and rotate a water wheel. Thank you!
3 weights at 320 gram is best

While clearing my parents home after their deaths I came across a Regula Cuckoo Clock. With out stripping it down completely I have found the following information Made in West Germany, 25-72, GM 1884288 & 1892176.
Unfortunately, there are no weights, chains, rings or hooks with the clock.
I would like to attempt a repair of the clock. Can it be identified and are parts still available.
If so are chains easy to refit
Kind regards

How much does one of the clock weights weigh so I can verify this is the Regula 25 one day clock please

Unfortunately, the weight and chains are missing, feared lost. If you can advise weights for a 25 and a 72 I could possibly purchase two pairs of weights and experiment with them. Presumably a 72 has longer chains than a 25.

Thank you, Sir
You and your knowledge base are absolutely amazing!! I have taken away so much by just reading through the posts on this page. I too, I’m in the midst of a cuckoo clock repair for my nephew. It is a regular 25 – S, GM1884288 1692176 movement. It fell off the wall and severely bent the main shaft where the hour and minute hands are attached. I tried to straighten the shaft, but have been unsuccessful. I don’t know if replacing the entire movement would be worth the expense, or where to search for a rebuilt replacement. Thank you for any response and your vast wealth of knowledge and expertise.
Thank you for that, it seems you just need the new movement. If it has any age at all its not worth chasing if it is still made today. These are 25 year movements at best
If yours has two weights and no dancer platform, please order the Regula 25 from this link

My husband just picked up a clock at an auction (they gave free as no one bought it). It is missing the pendulum (which is probably why we got it for free).
The inside markings say G.M. 1884288/189-2176 25-76. Made in West Germany, Albert Schwag KARLSRUHE. What size pendulum do we need?
What are the numbers off of the back plate of the clock movement itself? If it is hard to get to, usually you can stick a cell phone up behind the movement and get a picture of the numbers. Or through the side access panel if there is one.
Not off the paper work, not off the wooden case, but the movement stamp itself

hello I have a old cuckoo clock that is the sawmill style with music and 3 figures ,one fellow with an axe chops and works fine .The other two fellows operate a saw together i’m having the clock stop when I attach the wire from the anchor escapement assembly to wire that operates the two the two fellows arms and saw. I have tried just about everything ,any help please.
If using 275gram weights it would be fine to toss on 320 or even 375gram instead if the clock has some age. Reoil the clock also. Ultimately in the end the clock movement will need to be replaced or restored in the end Iam sure. There just is resistance in the gear train somewhere cause by wear or other.

Greetings,
I have a cuckoo clock that was in my family home when I was growing up, but at some time in the 1970s or 80s the chain that drives the movement broke and is completely out of the movement. It is a Regula 25 movement (please see attached photo). I have all of the parts to the clock including the broken chain, although the hook end of the chain is missing, but I can’t figure out a way to get the chain back on the chainwheel/pully, or a way to remove the movement to reattach the chain. The blocks that the cuckoo bellows sit on are in the way. So I have two questions:
Thank you for any information you may be able to provide.
Best Regards,
Kent Cline

If you bread tie the other chain so it does not fall off, you can flip the clock upside down to work on it. You can then usually feed the chain from the hole in the wood down to start it on the ratchet. Use a long screw driver to spin the ratchet around with the chain on it. Takes some patience but can be done.

Hi,
I have 1 day, 2 door music man/cuckoo clock which keeps stopping. Rather than have it serviced, I thought I would try and change the movement. Unfortunately I cannot find info on this movement anywhere. It has G M angem and Josep Braun Triberg stamped on it. I was hoping I could swap it out for a Regula 25 only I note the warning wire? that stops the music fan moving is on the left of the main pendulum pivot instead of the right. Do you think I can swap it if I can do something with the warning wire? Any other info about the clock would be appreciated.
Best Regards
Mike
Thank you James for your quick and helpful response. Think I will look for a cheap old 25 movement just to try and see what happens before I buy a new one. Heck, I can always put the old one back if there’s a problem, (optimistic). You say that’s an old one, would you have a ball park date? The clock case seems to have aged well.
It is made in the 60s is my guess

That one is so old I cant say for sure the R25 will fit up easy or not. Sometimes they do, other times there has been some changes in the design. It maybe a challenge, not sure exactly what you will run into. Hopefully the hand shaft length is the same and the chain holes in the case are the same

Just acquired a Lotscher cuckoo clock. We cannot seem to find any picture of it anywhere so we can’t find the “name” of the design. We are curious to see how old it is and possibly what it is called. The clock has dancers, cuckoo and animals that move up and down with melodies. There are 3 chains, however the chain closest to the face of the clock just falls to the floor when we put the weight on so it seems it may have come off the sprocket (I am assuming that all 3 chains are on sprockets). Is that fixable? We do see markings 25/1-D, is the date code listed next to the 25 or 34 on the clock? I am attaching pictures, any information you could provide would be appreciated.

Hi there! I have a chalet style cuckoo clock. Inside, engraved on the movement, it says: Made in Germany, Anton Schneider Sohn. clock 859. 25-c. It also says “synth oil” on the movement. It came with a pendulum and 3 weights each of which is engraved 275. It has a dancer platform which rotates and what appears to be a music box type mechanism which is controlled by the third chain/weight. It was apparently running at a point because it was at least serviced in 4/1994 from a sticker on the back of the clock.
My question is; What is the best way to see if it works? Should I just hang the clock and put the weights on? I already thoroughly dusted and cleaned the outside of the clock case, and the movement seems very clean.Should I I oil it? Thanks for your help!

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Any idea as to the age of this clock based upon the information I’ve provided? I know it is at least 30 years old because it was serviced in 1994.
Beginning in 1970 they started using a letter code for the manufacturing date.Manufacturing Codes for “Regula” cuckoo clock movements.
The code is a single alphabetical letter stamped on the back movement plate. A=1970 or 1990; B=1971 or 1991, etc. The cycle repeats every 20 years. There is NO G, I, O, Q, Y or Z
Production Code Production year(s)
A 1970/1990/2010/2030
B 1971/1991/2011/2031
C 1972/1992/2012/2032
D 1973/1993/2013/2033

EXPLANATION:
Near the center of each movement, there is a LETTER stamped into the movement. This LETTER indicates the production year. The letter repeats every 20 years

I bought my cuckoo clock in 1972 in Germany. It is an 8-day clock, two chains, no platform. The original weights are lost. What size (how many grams) should replacement weights be?
Factory will say 1500 grams. I say they are saving on shipping costs and clock runs best on 1750. If older definitely 1750 is my answer. Do what you will.

I have a Black Forest 8-day cuckoo clock that my father-in-law purchased in Germany years ago. It has a 3-weight Regula T.O. A72/1 movement and a 28.5 cm pendulum. It looks as if somebody tried to replace the cuckoo chain, which periodically hangs up. All three chains are of 1.2 mm brass, but while the other two chains are 46 LPF, the cuckoo chain is 44 LPF and stretched out. I’m assuming that someone replaced that chain with the wrong size, and that causes the cogs to bind.
All three weights are on the movement. It’s a Chalet style with dancers, waterwheel, and the cuckoo, with a “Der Fröhlicher Wanderer” music box.
Am I correct that I need to replace the 44 LPF chain with a 46 LPF chain? If so, where can I find the proper replacement chain?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi, we have a cuckcoo clock with the Regula Clock 359 movement. After being out of town for a week we restarted the clock. We haven’t had any issues with the clock before going out of town. Can you offer any suggestions on how to correct this issue? Thanks for your time.
Not easy, best to put it on a stand where you can run it while looking at the back of the movement. There will be an arm that goes from the movement to the music box and if this bent over time slightly it will do this.
Not easy to explain but if you run it on the stand and watch the interaction you will see it

I need to replace the works on my clock. It is marked REGULA 25-X GM 1884288 1692176. So I think the movement I need is the R25 but I am confused on the drop. When I measure from the top of the movement to the center of the leaf on the pendulum I get 8 1/4″. Which drop do I need?
To get the “Drop” length
The drop is the length of the pendulum measured in a certain way. This is measured from the top of the movement itself and all the way down to the center of the pendulum leaf. The pendulum leaf slides up and down but this measurement will be the center where it used to keep approximate time.

Hi. I am trying to identify the clock movement in my grandparent’s cuckoo clock. There are no numbers/stickers on the case, the movement or on the pendulum. I have bought D Rod Lloyd’s book The cuckoo clock owners manual but can’t find it in there. I think the clock dates from around the 1960s and is a carved/nature clock. It does not work at the moment, I’ve attached a picture
Thank you in advance for any advice. I would really like to restore it but have no knowledge about clocks.
That is a novelty clock that was made for a very short time. That is about all I know about that one as it did not become very popular or mass produced.

Hi James, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Can you tell me how many pendulum sweeps (tick-tocks) per minute the Regula 25 makes for it to be in correct time. I’m guessing 70.
Hi,
You got me, I do not know or have the answer on the BPH on that unit. However, all that is needed is to slide the leaf UP to speed the timekeeping, or down to slow it.

I have an 8-day GM clock from 1974
If the movement says 34 on the back plate anywhere, as seen at this link
https://www.clockworks.com/product/regula-34-cuckoo-clock-movement

Hello,
I have a clock i purchased new in Zurich in 1977 and am interested in replacing the movement because it no longer works.Unattended kids pulling on the chains to watch and listen to the bird have broken it. After reading your information, the clock has two weights each stamped 320.I removed the back cover looking for ID marks on the movement. The only markings are PENDELL 23.5 cm. Looking carefully, there are no other stamps to be found. Hopefully you can give me some information so I can try to either fix or replace this movement and get the clock back in working order.
Thank You,
Shanon
How can I get new click wheels for Mr regula 25, clock has 3 weights, chalet style with dancers and music box. Click is early 60 or late 50. Not sure, email me with suggestions on repairs. There are other numbers on the clock, Believe 2 different numbers
Hi,
Hi
Can you email some pics of the back of the clock, with the back off, to clockworks@clockworks.com and Ill be able to ID it
Thanks !
James
James,
Thanks for this very informative blog!
My Regula works are stamped “Made in West Germany.” Does that correspond to a certain date of origin range, say 1949-1990?
Also, the bellows appear to be kid-skin and work fine… is it possible they are original?
One last question: Can I run the clock without using the music box and not hanging that weight.
Thanks,
Daniel
Dates are right
Bellow cloth is most likely original, but does not mean much. It is not considered an antique in the clock world.
Yes

I have a Regula movement showing…. 20 GM1705294
Is this a very old unit and can I fit an alternative movement.
I have a GMNr 25 1884288 1892176. Juat aays 25 . theres no other marking except before the long row of numbers trying to find out how much it’s worth. Its in great shap.
We know only parts, and that movement sells for $120 new at this link https://www.clockworks.com/product/cuckoo-clock-movement-regula-25

Hi I have ave clock that I need a new music governor for and I see you have one for a Regula 34 mine is a regula 25 mine has a broken plastic gear on it would your part work?
unfortunately this music box will not have the proper tooth count on the drive gear, and will not mesh properly. This will not be sufficient for your cuckoo clock. –Bob

Have a 1920 – 30 cuckoo. The pattern of the movement suggests it is a Regula 02. The movement isn’t identified but the pattern of the plate is certain. Is there any literature or specs available for these ?
I have a 2 train Regula Cuckoo stamed 23.5 cm Pendulum. I need a new Pendulum. Can you supply?
Hi
Is this an 8 day movement or one?
James
8 day movement. I’m not sure which size pendulum to order, I see 3 different sizes listed.
The maple style pendulums are at this link https://www.clockworks.com/product/cuckoo-clock-maple-pendulum The one day clocks can only take the smallest or medium sized pendulums, and not the large one. On the other hand, the 8 day clocks can take the medium or large one only, and not the smallest one.
This is the oak style link = https://www.clockworks.com/product/cuckoo-clock-pendulum-oak-style
James
8 day
And I noticed that the leaf comes in 3 sizes and I don’t know which one to order
looking for a 12A 72 Pl265 works. Can you supply? Thanks John
Hi
We only offer the kind with the dancer platform attached to the movement at the moment.
If the dancer table comes out with the movement in other words, we maybe able to help with the new unit.
If the dancer table is separate from the movement, it is no longer available be we can restore the old unit for you.
Either way, can you email some pics of this one to clockworks@clockworks.com
I appreciate the response. Please send pictures and cost. Thanks John
It is reverse. We need pics of what you have, to see what we can do. Please
I have concluded this project is above my pay grade, so taking it to a clock repair person. I thank you for the reponce. John
HI
That is a tricky one, I will look into it on Monday for you and see if its available
