Regula Cuckoo Movement Identification

Regula Cuckoo Movement Identification

Most cuckoo clocks made after 1950 have movements that are made by the Regula cuckoo clock movement company. Any cuckoo clock made after this time has an 80 percent chance of being a Regula.

Most of the time there will be identification markings that will reveal if it is a Regula cuckoo clock movement. But to be certain use these methods for identification.

Regula Cuckoo Conversions

Here are some common measurements conversions for the pendulum length. The pendulum on a Regula cuckoo is from the top of the movement to the center of the leaf. The movement will be stamped with this number usually. It will have a stamp with a CM length usually on the left side of the back plate.

  • 19.5cm = 7 3/4 Drop
  • 23.5cm = 9 1/4 Drop
  • 28.5cm = 10 1/2 Drop
  • 40cm = 15 3/4 Drop

Two train or three train movements

If the clock has two weights that run the movement, identifying it as a Regula is simple. When we say two weights, it means on the movement only.

There may be three weights on the clock, but only two weights are on the movement itself. In other words, there are three train movements that take three weights. A three train movement would have three weights on the movement itself.

However, we are talking about two weights on the movement regardless if the clock has three weights on it. One could be for the music box. This is separate from the movement itself. If the movement alone takes two weights, we call this a two train movement.

This means the movement has two sides of gears from big to little inside the plates. One for the cuckoo and one for the time. If the clock movement itself takes three weights, this of course is a three train movement.

Two train, two weight Regula Identification

See if the cuckoo movement says 25 or 34 on it. This would be above the wheel with the spikes that make the bellows go up and down. Above this wheel and to the right a little, there will be numbers that are in a stamp right in the brass.

It may have more numbers or letters after the 25 or 34 but don’t pay attention to anything but the 25 or 34 for now. The 25 means it is a one day clock that takes two weights. A 34 means it is an eight day clock movement that runs on two weights.

Both of these are the most common cuckoo clock movements made in the world. The 25 or 34 identification stamp alone means it was made by the Regula factory in Germany.

The two styles of the two weight movements

The two train, two weight movements come in two styles. One with a dancer platform and one without the dancer platform. Keep in mind just because there are dancers on the cuckoo clock, it does not mean there is an attachment. This is an important distinction when ordering a new cuckoo clock movement.

The two weight cuckoo movements with the dancer platform comes with the platform already on it. The platform is available in a few heights. This measurement, or height, needs to be known if purchasing a new movement. The dancer platform height is the distance from the top of the movement to the platform base itself.

The clock may say 25 on it for one day and 34 for an eight day. However, with these same identification marks
they have either the platform or no platform. Therefore, these same numbers may be on the movement regardless
if there are dancers or not.

To sum Up

  • Figure out if it is a 2 or 3 train movement
  • Determine if there is a a dancer platform and if so, is it already on the movement itself.
  • On the brass back plate look for identification markings of a 25 or 34
  • Order the dancer or non dancer Regula in the 25 for a one day or a 34 for an eight day movement

Hi James, I’ve got a Black Forest cuckoo clock with a Regula movement, manufactured by Schmeckenbecher. It’s a two-weight movement, Made in Germany, stamped with a 24, not a 25 or 34 — clearly 24. I see no single alphebetic letter. G.M. 1704075, 1705294, 1649000, 1674539 are stamped along the right side of the movement. Can you assist me with trying to determine the date of the clock?

Hi James. Here’s one I can’t seem to find any information on. Found in an attic is a Black Forest cucoo clock. The back of the movement says E. Schmeckenbecher GM 1884288 1892176 Made in West Germany and there is also a 25 stamped on it. The chains are decorative as they are attached to the wood and the weights are hollow plastic. There is a motor in the back which takes a D cell battery. It must be spring wound as the pendulum moves without the weight. It needs maintenance and I cant find any information on a Regula that takes a battery and also says “25” on it. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Hello,I have a 3 weight clock and I may need to replace mechanism. Stamped on brass is G.M. 1884288 and 1892176 along with “made in west Germany” and A25-82. Which do I need to order? 2 weights in the works and the 3rd weight off to the side to run a music box movement and rotate a water wheel. Thank you!

While clearing my parents home after their deaths I came across a Regula Cuckoo Clock. With out stripping it down completely I have found the following information Made in West Germany, 25-72, GM 1884288 & 1892176.
Unfortunately, there are no weights, chains, rings or hooks with the clock.
I would like to attempt a repair of the clock. Can it be identified and are parts still available.
If so are chains easy to refit

Kind regards
M

Unfortunately, the weight and chains are missing, feared lost. If you can advise weights for a 25 and a 72 I could possibly purchase two pairs of weights and experiment with them. Presumably a 72 has longer chains than a 25.

You and your knowledge base are absolutely amazing!! I have taken away so much by just reading through the posts on this page. I too, I’m in the midst of a cuckoo clock repair for my nephew. It is a regular 25 – S, GM1884288 1692176 movement. It fell off the wall and severely bent the main shaft where the hour and minute hands are attached. I tried to straighten the shaft, but have been unsuccessful. I don’t know if replacing the entire movement would be worth the expense, or where to search for a rebuilt replacement. Thank you for any response and your vast wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Thanks. Found an almost identical cuckoo for $35 on eBay and cannibalized its movement. After some headaches, finally got the bird and the music box playing nicely together again. But, it wasn’t easy 🙂

My husband just picked up a clock at an auction (they gave free as no one bought it). It is missing the pendulum (which is probably why we got it for free).
The inside markings say G.M. 1884288/189-2176 25-76. Made in West Germany, Albert Schwag KARLSRUHE. What size pendulum do we need?

Greetings,

I have a cuckoo clock that was in my family home when I was growing up, but at some time in the 1970s or 80s the chain that drives the movement broke and is completely out of the movement. It is a Regula 25 movement (please see attached photo). I have all of the parts to the clock including the broken chain, although the hook end of the chain is missing, but I can’t figure out a way to get the chain back on the chainwheel/pully, or a way to remove the movement to reattach the chain. The blocks that the cuckoo bellows sit on are in the way. So I have two questions:

  1. Is there some method for routing the movement drive chain back into the movement without removing the movement?
  2. Is there somewhere I can buy a replacement chain that includes the small, ornate hook that the weight hangs off of?

Thank you for any information you may be able to provide.

Best Regards,

Kent Cline

Hi,

I have 1 day, 2 door music man/cuckoo clock which keeps stopping. Rather than have it serviced, I thought I would try and change the movement. Unfortunately I cannot find info on this movement anywhere. It has G M angem and Josep Braun Triberg stamped on it. I was hoping I could swap it out for a Regula 25 only I note the warning wire? that stops the music fan moving is on the left of the main pendulum pivot instead of the right. Do you think I can swap it if I can do something with the warning wire? Any other info about the clock would be appreciated.

Best Regards
Mike

Thank you James for your quick and helpful response. Think I will look for a cheap old 25 movement just to try and see what happens before I buy a new one. Heck, I can always put the old one back if there’s a problem, (optimistic). You say that’s an old one, would you have a ball park date? The clock case seems to have aged well.

Just acquired a Lotscher cuckoo clock. We cannot seem to find any picture of it anywhere so we can’t find the “name” of the design. We are curious to see how old it is and possibly what it is called. The clock has dancers, cuckoo and animals that move up and down with melodies. There are 3 chains, however the chain closest to the face of the clock just falls to the floor when we put the weight on so it seems it may have come off the sprocket (I am assuming that all 3 chains are on sprockets). Is that fixable? We do see markings 25/1-D, is the date code listed next to the 25 or 34 on the clock? I am attaching pictures, any information you could provide would be appreciated.

Hi there! I have a chalet style cuckoo clock. Inside, engraved on the movement, it says: Made in Germany, Anton Schneider Sohn. clock 859. 25-c. It also says “synth oil” on the movement. It came with a pendulum and 3 weights each of which is engraved 275. It has a dancer platform which rotates and what appears to be a music box type mechanism which is controlled by the third chain/weight. It was apparently running at a point because it was at least serviced in 4/1994 from a sticker on the back of the clock.
My question is; What is the best way to see if it works? Should I just hang the clock and put the weights on? I already thoroughly dusted and cleaned the outside of the clock case, and the movement seems very clean.Should I I oil it? Thanks for your help!

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Any idea as to the age of this clock based upon the information I’ve provided? I know it is at least 30 years old because it was serviced in 1994.

I have a Black Forest 8-day cuckoo clock that my father-in-law purchased in Germany years ago. It has a 3-weight Regula T.O. A72/1 movement and a 28.5 cm pendulum. It looks as if somebody tried to replace the cuckoo chain, which periodically hangs up. All three chains are of 1.2 mm brass, but while the other two chains are 46 LPF, the cuckoo chain is 44 LPF and stretched out. I’m assuming that someone replaced that chain with the wrong size, and that causes the cogs to bind.

All three weights are on the movement. It’s a Chalet style with dancers, waterwheel, and the cuckoo, with a “Der Fröhlicher Wanderer” music box.

Am I correct that I need to replace the 44 LPF chain with a 46 LPF chain? If so, where can I find the proper replacement chain?

Thanks,
Dave

Good evening, I have this cuckoo clock that I received after my mother n law passed away. Everything was with the clock but the pendulum. Can you tell me what one I need to buy so I can make the clock work. I looked inside and found that Anton Schneider Sohne I assume is the maker, and GM 1884288 1692176 regula 25- D.are numbers I found. Hopefully you can help me. Thank you! I have spent all day looking at pictures to see if I could find it, but I had no luck so I am turning to you. Thanks again, look forward to hearing from you!

Hi!,

I have an Albert Schwabe / Regula 25-8 to repair. GM 1884 288 169 2176. It is a two train clock with an independent music box, driven by its own weight. The cuckoo is driven by the mechanism, and the other little figure is driven by the musical mechanism.
The old lady that owns it has lost the eights.. I am trying to find out what weights to buy. Any advice would be most welcome.

Can you tell me what company made this movement or what I can replace it with? The plate measures 77mm horizontally across the back plate and 61.6mm vertically across the back plate. There are no markings on the movement except for “Made in West Germany 410” in the lower right corner of the back plate. Thanks for what ever information you can give me.

David, your clock appears to be one made by the ‘Cuckoo Clock Mfg Co.’, which is now out of business. The movement is one made by the AMS company. Check out YouTube, “Repairing a 1day AMS movement “ by Mark Munnerlyn.

Hello:

I have a 1-day cuckoo clock with the movement made by Regula. On the movement it is stamped 812536 and the number 20 on another area. It says “Made In Germany” and not “West Germany”, but I don’t know if that makes any difference. Someone wrote in pencil on the case 6/36. Could it be that old? Can you help me date this clock, please?

Is this clock worth destroying? I want to carve my own but needed the guts. Thought it would be easiest to keep the housing and replace the accents. Keeping the dancers attached, maybe just painting them differently. Got it on eBay for less than a movement and music box.

Hi, we have a cuckcoo clock with the Regula Clock 359 movement. After being out of town for a week we restarted the clock. For some reason now the dancers just play continuously until the chain weight runs out instead of just playing on the 1/2 hour and hour. We haven’t had any issues with the clock before going out of town. Can you offer any suggestions on how to correct this issue? Thanks for your time.

I need to replace the works on my clock. It is marked REGULA 25-X GM 1884288 1692176. So I think the movement I need is the R25 but I am confused on the drop. When I measure from the top of the movement to the center of the leaf on the pendulum I get 8 1/4″. Which drop do I need?

Hi. I am trying to identify the clock movement in my grandparent’s cuckoo clock. There are no numbers/stickers on the case, the movement or on the pendulum. I have bought D Rod Lloyd’s book The cuckoo clock owners manual but can’t find it in there. I think the clock dates from around the 1960s and is a carved/nature clock. It does not work at the moment, I’ve attached a picture

Thank you in advance for any advice. I would really like to restore it but have no knowledge about clocks.

Thanks for this very informative blog!

My Regula works are stamped “Made in West Germany.” Does that correspond to a certain date of origin range, say 1949-1990?
Also, the bellows appear to be kid-skin and work fine… is it possible they are original?

One last question: Can I run the clock without using the music box and not hanging that weight.
