Dating Regula Clock Movements
Dating a Regula clock movement is essential for determining its age, authenticity, and potential value. Regula, a well-respected German manufacturer, has been producing high-quality cuckoo clock movements since the mid-20th century. Whether you’re an experienced horologist or a hobbyist, understanding how to date these clock movements can enhance your clock restoration projects and help you maintain historical accuracy. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of identifying and dating Regula clock movements, while highlighting some essential tools and services available on our website, Clockworks.com.
Before you can date a Regula clock movement, you need to verify that the movement is indeed a Regula product. Look for the Regula logo stamped on the back plate of the movement. Typically, the logo consists of the word “REGULA” along with the model number. Regula clock movements are commonly numbered 25, 34, or 72, which represent different movement types used in cuckoo clocks.
The code is a single alphabetical letter stamped on the back movement plate. A=1970 or 1990; B=1971 or 1991, etc. The cycle repeats every 20 years. There is NO G, I, O, Q, Y or Z
| Production Code | Production year(s) |
|---|---|
| A | 1970/1990/2010/2030 |
| B | 1971/1991/2011/2031 |
| C | 1972/1992/2012/2032 |
| D | 1973/1993/2013/2033 |
| E | 1974/1994/2014/2034 |
| F | 1975/1995/2015/2035 |
| H | 1976/1996/2016/2036 |
| J | 1977/1997/2017/2037 |
| K | 1978/1998/2018/2038 |
| L | 1979/1999/2019/2039 |
| M | 1980/2000/2020/2040 |
| N | 1981/2001/2021/2041 |
| P | 1982/2002/2022/2042 |
| R | 1983/2003/2023/2043 |
| S | 1984/2004/2024/2044 |
| T | 1985/2005/2025/2045 |
| U | 1986/2006/2026/2046 |
| V | 1987/2007/2027/2047 |
| W | 1988/2008/2028/2048 |
| X | 1989/2009/2029/2049 |
Near the center of each movement, there is a LETTER stamped into the movement. This LETTER indicates the production year. The letter repeats every 20 years
Example: Movements produced in 1990 will have the same letter “A” as movements produced in 1970, 2010, and 2030.
Key Features to Identify a Regula Movement:
- Stamped Logo: The “Regula” name is clearly stamped on the back plate.
- Model Numbers: Common model numbers include 25, 34, 72, and occasionally others.
- Design: Regula movements often feature brass gears, levers, and a pendulum escapement.
Once you’ve identified the movement as a Regula, you can proceed with dating it.
Methods to Date Regula Clock Movements
1. Check the Stamped Date Code
Many Regula movements have a date code stamped alongside the model number. This code typically includes a year or a combination of numbers and letters that denote the production date. For example, a code like “84” indicates that the movement was produced in 1984.
If your movement lacks a clear date code, don’t worry. There are other ways to estimate the age of your Regula clock movement.
2. Analyze the Construction and Materials
The materials used in Regula movements can provide clues about their age:
- Older Movements (1950s-1960s): These movements often have heavier brass plates and hand-engraved markings.
- Mid-Range Movements (1970s-1980s): By this period, Regula introduced more standardized stamping processes and lighter brass materials.
- Modern Movements (1990s-Present): These movements may incorporate plastic components and more refined stamping processes.
3. Compare with Catalogs and Historical Records
Old Regula catalogs and clockmaker’s guides can be invaluable resources for dating movements. Cross-reference the model numbers and movement styles with these records to pinpoint the approximate production date.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning and Oiling a Regula Movement
Once you’ve dated your Regula movement, regular maintenance is key to preserving its longevity. Follow these steps to clean and oil your movement:
- Disassemble the Movement: Carefully remove the clock movement from the case and disassemble it, noting the position of each component.
- Clean the Parts: Soak the parts in a clock cleaning solution. Use a soft brush to remove any remaining dirt.
- Rinse and Dry: Rinse the parts thoroughly with water and dry them completely to prevent rust.
- Lubricate the Gears: Use a precision clock oiler to apply a small amount of oil to the gears and pivot points. Avoid over-oiling, as this can attract dirt.
- Reassemble the Movement: Put the movement back together, ensuring all parts are in their correct positions.
- Test the Movement: Once reassembled, wind the clock and test it for accuracy and smooth operation.

I have an AMS cuckoo clock that I purchased in Germany in 1973 in the Black Forest region. I bought it for my mother, who died only six months after receiving the gift. It was then passed to my father, and when he died, I received the clock. It is a musical cuckoo clock with four dancing figures and a cuckoo. On the inside, it is carved with the word West Germany and it has a code inside that is hard to read: 11(or maybe a D instead of 11 or maybe a 4?) 2293 and below that it says SI or SJ. I know it is an AMS clock because I have the original instructions written in German and other languages, including English. It does not have the certification sticker. I am not sure if it is a one-day or eight-day movement. I know my father took good care of the clock and had it serviced before he died. I want to sell it but have no idea of its value. Thank you for your time.
Need a pic of the movement, or know the gram amount stamped on one of the weights, to determine for you if the clock is one day or 8 please

Did you ever find any info on this movement? I have the same one. Trying to figure out approx manufacture date(s). “Obsolete” isn’t really helpful. Trying to figure out maker of cuckoo clock, and the date of this movement may help. I understand that Regula grew into providing 80% of the movements that were put into many types of cuckoo clocks.
