Jauch clock movement conversion

A new Jauch clock movement conversion is the best thing to do if it is possible. The new unit from Clockworks would be a fraction of the cost of a cleaning on the old.

There is no way even the best repair job can be better than a new one. Although the conversion will provide a movement made by someone else, the quality is equivalent. The following is a guide for the Jauch clock movement conversion aspect alone.

These are the specific requirements for the conversion only. The regular movement installation instructions will be on the receipt upon checkout. Of course, if questions, we are here to help. All you have to do is send an email.

Three weight movement conversions only

These are available only for the three weight floor clock models such as a grandfather clock. If you have a spring driven Jauch clock movement there is no replacement.

An overhaul of the movement is the only option. If this is the current situation please email some pics of the clock movement and we can quote for a professional restoration instead.

Jauch clock movement conversions include the following

The Hermle conversion kit contains the movement, shims, seat board screws, hands, and pendulum hook.

The movement itself comes with the chains, the hooks and ends, the leader, and the suspension spring. It will also have the nut to hold the hands on the clock.

All movements go through testing and will have fresh oil from the manufacturer. It is ready for installation and set up to run for another 30 years.

Tool Requirements for a Jauch clock movement conversion

The Jauch to Hermle conversion requires only the very basic tools. Two pairs of needle nose pliers and a couple of different screwdrivers is usually all that you need.

The simple conversion only stuff

Instructions for the movement will be on the email receipt, however these are for the conversion only. The conversion does require a little more involvement than just swapping out the same with same.

The movement is not the same but it is so close we only need to do a couple of things. Therefore these are the simple requirements specific to the conversion of Jauch to Hermle.

These are the only things that make this a little more intricate than just swapping the movement with the exact same. The dial has to attach to the case instead of the movement.

The new movement will have to sit on the shims to have the hand shaft at the correct height. It requires a little more weight for the chime and will come with the filler to put into the current weight shell.

The movement will come with different hands because the old ones will not fit. The kit comes with a new top hook for the wood stick pendulum because the old one will not hang on the new movement.

All this comes with the kit and is all just swapping the parts except the dial.

Shims Come Too

The hand shaft height on the new movement is a little different then the old. It is up higher and would require these shims to boost it up in the air some. That way it's in line with the dial hole like it was.

New Hands

The old hands will no longer fit on the new movement so new hands come with this conversion kit. They will be the same in style and appearance as the clock has now. The size of the mounting hole for the minute hand is the only difference.

New Pendulum Top Hook

All these Jauch kits had wood stick pendulums on them instead of the brass lyre style. The way in which the pendulum attaches to its hanger is with a top hook. A new one comes with the kit because the old one will no longer hang up there.

Longer seat board screws

Longer seat board screws come with it due to the movement being higher to line up with the dial hole.

These are the two screws that go under the movement to secure it. They are longer to reach up in there to secure the new movement.

The moon dial

The dial needs to attach to the wooden clock case instead of mounting to the movement. If the current dial has feet that lock into the movement, this will have to change.

Remove the feet and attach the dial to the wood. The moon phase will no longer function. This needs to be done or just get a new dial for the new clock movement if it is available. More details about the dial is in another section.

Cutting the pendulum shorter

You may or may not have to cut down the current pendulum by 1 1/2 inches. This is usually not the situation but it does happen. These units almost always are operating a wood stick style pendulum, so cutting some length off is easy.

Jauch Clock Conversion Dial Instructions

These are the instructions for the dial to mount to the wood case instead of the movement on a Jauch clock conversion.

If the dial attaches to the movement with four posts coming off the back of, this will have to change.

Clock moon dial mounting

There are two ways the dial mounts to the clock. The best scenario for the conversion is to have the dial attach to the wood case. It will have no interaction with the movement at all except if there is a moon phase.

If the dial attaches to the wood case already it makes this easy. The dial is taken care of and there is nothing else to do with it.

The other half of the time the dial may mount to the movement via four posts on the back.

Dial feet removal if necessary

The four posts need to come off and then drill some small holes into the corners of the dial. The dial would need to attach to the wood case instead of the movement.

The reason is the new movement will not have the holes in the front plate to clip the dial on the movement. Some posts unscrew and some snap off but in some situations you can even use bolt cutters.

Dial back board removal option

A different way is to remove that back blind plate that the face attaches to for the Jauch clock movement conversion. That is the plate the bolts stick out of and is separate from the fancy front face.

They screw or rivet in so just see how it mounts and reverse that method. The risk in doing it this way is bending or scratching the face when doing this. Also if screws or rivets come out it leaves holes in the front face appearance.

The dial makes the clock

The dial on the old Jauch clock movement may be better quality than what is on the market today. If it is a high end clock from back in the day, the dial may be worth treating well.

The dial is what is seen all the time. Its what makes the clock so to speak. So treat the dial well and try not to scratch it up during the conversion. If all goes south we do offer them for the movement kit to replace it.

Jauch Clock Dial Conversion - Handling the Dial

When handling shiny parts like the weights and the dial use gloves to avoid touching the shiny part with the hands. The oils from the skin will eventually make black marks on anything shiny. In addition, these are not delicate but if the corners get hit they curl up and even with correction does not look good.

So just do not let it hit the ground and to not touch the shiny parts with the skin.

Jauch Clock Dial Conversion Moon Phase Interaction

In either situation the moon phase will no longer function if using the dial that is currently on the clock. If insistent on the phase of the moon turning a new dial will have to be bought for the new movement.

Clockworks offers these on the moon dial page. Also, if needing a new moon gear to spin the new moon dial because the old moon gear will not fit.

There is only a handful of customers that are very insistent they have the moon disk spin and usually no one looks at it anyway.

Jauch Mechanical Clock Movement Availability

Jauch mechanical clock movement availability is zero. They are out of business and nothing is made. However there is still hope for a replacement unit but only if it is a three weight driven movement.

Jauch three weight clocks

Available for conversion from Jauch to a Hermle movement instead. This is what Clockworks is offering as a replacement. The Hermle clock movements are of equivalent quality and size and have the same functions.

The Hermle clock movement ships with a few additional items to make the conversion possible and simple.

Jauch Mechanical Clock Movement Conversion requirements, the short version

The dial has to attach to the wood case instead of the movement itself. This is not hard and we thoroughly explain it. We provide a new top hook for the wood stick pendulum.

New hands also come with the new movement. Simple things like this will make the conversion possible and easy to do.

Jauch spring driven clocks

No longer made and there is no conversion kit either. These would need to be an overhaul by us. These ship ok and never are a problem as long as the double boxing system is done.

Clockworks would need only the movement and nothing else. The only replacement method that could be done is basically gut the clock case and start over.

Why the spring Jauch can't have a conversion kit

There is no close equivalent movement to this obsolete Jauch movement style in the modern market. What is the closest is still so far from plug and play it's not worth chasing. It would require a new dial because the winding holes will no longer line up. The pendulum will also not fit right.

The hands are not the same as the new one and the overall dimensions are not the same. The shaft the hands go on would be a different length. The strike or chime hammers will not be in the same place on the new one.

So really there is no new one that will convert into the Jauch spring driven clock case. It would be more like just building a new clock from an old clock case.

Why a New Jauch Clock Movement

Why get a new Jauch clock movement conversion instead of repairing the old one? The old movement has worked 30 to 40 years with not much complaint. However over time the oil becomes a solid and creates wear on the outer plates.

Clean the clock and install new bushings in these outer plates is an option. But this is time consuming and expensive so it would end up taking weeks or months to complete. The price would be twice as much as a new movement would cost.

Even the best repair of the old unit will not be better than the new unit, that would be impossible. So the choice is easy, a new movement would cost less and be done faster. It is the best choice to get a new Jauch Clock Movement

.

How the new movement comes

Jauch is out of business but Clockworks offers one by Hermle that is very close to the same. The quality is the same and still made in Germany. The new Jauch Clock Movement replacement will be the same in every way except a few fitting modifications are required.

The movement will be brand new and ready to run another 30 years and will come already oiled with instructions. The movement will come with its chains and the hand nut in the front.

It will also come with its pendulum leader and the suspension spring at the top. Basically that entire gear meatball that came out of the clock case by removing the two screws from underneath.

Advantages of the new one

The new Jauch Clock movement replacement is much easier to get parts for because there is no parts available for Jauch. Because it will now be made by Hermle instead of Jauch there are more options also.

It can be upgraded with the pendulum to a metal Lyre style if you choose where this is not possible for the Jauch unit. The movement can be replaced again in another 25-30 years as the converted movements are still available.

If anything were to ever happen to the dial, hands, gong, weights or pendulum, it can be replaced new.

It costs less than a repair especially considering a repair would have to be done every 8 years or so. A new movement is less than an overhaul, it will last longer, and is faster and easier.

Jauch PL64 Clock Movement

The obsolete Jauch PL64 clock movement will have a mark of PL64 or just 64 on the back plate. This one is no longer made however we can offer the Hermle equivalent. They are both German made and they were competitors at one time. Jauch went out of business and Hermle is still around. It is not plug and play but it is an easy conversion. There are some minor differences in the movement so it comes with some extra parts for this. There are only a few things to do and are in the list below.

Special note for triple chime units

The new movement will require the chime side rods to be reversed in order. That is the chime side only (your right as you face the clock or chime block), would need to have the rods taken out and reversed in order. Sometimes they are easy to take out and sometimes not so easy. If needed we do offer the chime block new that can go with the new movement.

Jauch clock movement conversion includes

  • Two small blocks to go under the movement, this will raise the hand shaft to be in the same spot
  • Longer seat board screws (because of above shims, longer screws are needed
  • New hands because the old ones will not fit the new unit
  • A top hook for the current wood stick pendulum. The old one will not hook up.
  • A heavier weight filler for one of the current weight shells. This heavy weight will be used on the chime side.

Jauch PL64 Availability

The Hermle clock movements are of equivalent quality and size and have the same functions. These conversion kits are only good for the three weight Jauch floor clock movements. If the Jauch movement is anything other than this it will have to be a repair instead. Please email us to discuss and set up the repair. If the clock has three weights and is a Jauch movement, there are conversion options. Get the clock running again with a brand new Hermle movement conversion kit.

Jauch PL64 Clock Movement Installation Requirements

  • The dial must attach to the case rather than the movement. There is a 50/50 chance on whether the dial will attach to the case or the movement with dial feet. If it attaches to the movement then unscrew or chop off the dial feet and attach it to the wood case instead.
  • The replacement for the Jauch clock movement would have to be shimmed higher (Included)
  • New lead weight would go into the existing right hand chime weight shell. (Included)
  • The top hook on the pendulum will have to get swapped (Included)
  • The pendulum may or may not have to get shortened. If the clock is too slow, even with the bob all the way up, the pendulum stick must get cut 1 1/2 inches shorter.
  • The triple chime version may or may not need the chime rods on the chime side, reversed in order within the block
  • Please call us if you need assistance on replacing the Jauch clock movement.
  • If this does not work out and have the original packaging so it can be resold as new, it can be returned for a refund less restock fee.

Jauch PL64 Clock Movement Replacement

The Hermle clock movement is a Westminster Chime unit with 8 hammers on the back. This high quality German movement comes oiled and includes its chains, leader, suspension spring and hand nut.

Removal of the Jauch PL64 Clock Movement is easy and we provide instructions for the installation. This movement is in stock and can ship today. We are full time clock makers and retailers both, so if you need any assistance with the install we can help.

Replacing a movement is less costly than a overhaul. These movements last 25 years before needing an over haul, but since it's still being made at a fair price it is so much better just to replace. The clock will be problem free right away instead of months, last longer than an overhaul and it's already oiled.
