How Old? Hermle Movement Date Codes
Dating a Hermle clock movement by decoding the
date code stamp helps determine when the movement was made and whether it’s time for a replacement.
After locating the Hermle movement date code, use the chart below to determine its age.
If the movement is **over 20 years old**, it’s time to replace it. Only movements **under 20 years old** should be considered for repair.
Date Code System Change
Before 1987, Hermle movements were stamped with the year of production (e.g., “81” represents 1981).
Starting in 1988, letter codes replaced numbers—e.g., “A” for 1988, “B” for 1989, “C” for 1990, and so on.

| 76 = 1976 | 77 = 1977 | 78 = 1978 | 79 = 1979 | 80 = 1980 | 81 = 1981 | 82 = 1982 | 83 = 1983 | 84 = 1984 | 85 = 1985 | 86 = 1986 |
| 87 = 1987 | A = 1988 | B = 1989 | C = 1990 | D = 1991 | E = 1992 | F = 1993 | G = 1994 | H = 1995 | I = 1996 | J = 1997 |
| K = 1998 | L = 1999 | M = 2000 | N = 2001 | O = 2002 | P = 2003 | Q = 2004 | R = 2005 | S = 2006 | T = 2007 | U = 2008 |
| V = 2009 | W = 2010 | X = 2011 | Y = 2012 | Z = 2013 | AA = 2014 | AB = 2015 | AC = 2016 | AD = 2017 | AE = 2018 | AF = 2019 |
| AG = 2020 | AH = 2021 | AI = 2022 | AJ = 2023 | AK = 2024 | AL = 2025 |

We purchased a 1171-850 it came with 3 weights 2 being 9.6 pounds and 1 at 11.6 pounds. Are these the correct weights? According to the web they are post world war weights and if they are correct what is the correct placement for them? Currently we have the heaviest 1 on the right side . Thx for taking the time to answer .
They are fine for that unit. Put the heaviest one on your right as your facing the clock

I have a 1975 Emperor Grandmother clock called the Newport. In the rear, it says Jauch something with two sets of numbers 77 475 and 330020. The clock was bought in 1975. Can it be repaired? Is it better to replace it? and if replaced what will fit in its place?
That is an obsolete movement by Jauch clock company. No longer made so we have a conversion. Please read all about the conversion and order at this link

Clock is Franz Hermle, Made in West Germany, stamped with year A, 1988, code, I am guessing the model code is 1051-020. The clock has been kept on Silent for quite some time as we have a Grandfather clock in the same room. Today, my wife noticed the clock not running, guessing the spring had wound down, she opened the front door and tried to wind it only to see that the spring was wound. She opened the back and gave the pendulum a touch to start it. It operated a few seconds and came slowly to a stop. She gave it another touch and the pendulum felt like it was blocked from swinging. The pendulum was touched again and it felt as though there was a “soft” resistance but then the pendulum moved and went back to swinging again. This stoppage and soft touch was repeated again a couple of times and we stopped. At the front of the clock, the Chime lever was moved from silent to the first position, the time was set and the clock was restarted. At the top of the clock, on the hour, the clock chimed. After about 20 minutest, the clock continues to keep time and the chime is working.
Q. What might have been hanging up the pendulum and stopping the swinging? Could it have anything to do with the Chime being in Silent and then when the Chime lever was moved from Silent to the first notch, the resistance/obstacle to the pendulum was removed??
Thank you for any information.
This clock has turned into a family heirloom, being gifted to us by wife’s parents around 1988 or 89. This clock has been in service since we received it, never serviced, always ticking away!
These are 25 year movements, 30 at best. Time for the new one. This link

I am looking at purchasing a Franz Hermle Zaanse clock, but it has no weights. Am trying to find out what size replacement weights I would need and where to purchase them. Stamped on the left side of the movement is 75 with Franz Hermle below it and where it was made (West Germany) “Unadjusted” with the # 261-either 060A or 080A. On the right side of the movement is stamped 31 cm over 125.780. What do these numbers mean and will they help determine what size weights are needed?

I work at a Hope Hospice thrift store, a non-profit business. We received a Franz Hermle clock. I am trying to date and value it before I get into repairing it. I would appreciate it if you can help. [email protected]
What are the numbers off of the back plate of the clock movement itself? If it is hard to get to, usually you can stick a cell phone up behind the movement and get a picture of the numbers. Or through the side access panel if there is one.

I have a Hermle 791-082 Skeleton clock. On the back it has 16.5 pendulum length. The clock has a 41mm pendulum length and keeps perfect time. I the same clock with the same numbers however has a shorter pendulum. I would like to change the train wheels to make both clocks work with a longer pendulum. I have counted the teeth and the pinions.Where can I get replacement parts?
The 16.5 is the shortest that one comes in, thus no wheels for anything shorter

Hi James, thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I made a mistake in my original message to you, I said the the pendulum size was 41mm when it should have been 41cm. I am hoping to convert a movement that has a 16.5cm pendulum to accommodate a longer pendulum. I am hoping to achieve this by changing the train wheels. In the movement that I have with the longer pendulum (41cm) the wheel count is as follows: the minute wheel has 76 teeth, the third wheel has 66 teeth with 8 on the pinion the escape wheel has 39 teeth with 8 on the pinion.
I would appreciate any help or advice that you can give me.
Regards

This one only comes in 16.5cm that I know of. The gears are specific to that movement, other Hermle movements gears will not fit to make an alternate CM

Timing a balance clock movement
Balance Clock Movement Timing is done fairly easy. There are three types of clock balance movement styles post 1950. This section is for those balance units that do not have a platform escapement.
The platform escapement can be read about in another section. These notes are only for the larger balance wheel in the top center of the clock movement.
For example, movements in the Urgos 6/ series and many of the Hermle clock movements. Hermle movements such as 340-020 and 350-020. Out of these, two styles, the old style and then the new style.
Use of the old style was all through the 70’s and 80’s and 90’s. Around this time there was a switch to the new style on the Hermle units. By this time the Urgos units were out of production.
The old style
The old style is one with a round spring that goes up and down (Vertical). It goes in a circle around the center arbor of the balance wheel. In this style there is a slide arm with a tiny weight on the balance wheel itself. There is a + and – on the wheel. To speed up time go towards the plus sign.
However this style is not always easy to regulate and can be very hard to get it perfect. The factory has special devices to make it perfect. However it’s not that easy on the customer end with this style balance. For this reason it has been improved upon during future manufacturing.
If the old style balance then the clock movement has some age to it. If this is the situation it is just best to replace the unit with the new one. Clockworks offers the movement brand new with the new style balance for less than the cost of a cleaning.
The clock movement has lasted 25 years or more. In theory the new unit should last more than this with the improved aspects.
The new style
The non pendulum units offered on this page all have the new and improved balance assemblies. Despite the change on the balance, these units are a direct fit and will install in the clock case the exact same way as the old unit.
If the numbers match from the old unit to the numbers offered on this page, than the movement will be the exact same. It will be the same as it is now but brand new and with the improved balance.
The improved upon balance units have a different kind of hairspring (Horizontal). It will also have a screw to regulate it rather than a slider arm. The regulator screw is on the back of the movement near the balance.
There is a + and – sign next to it meaning fast or slow. If the clock needs to be faster to keep time then the screw would be turned to the plus and opposite for slowing time.
The factory times the balance movement before the new movement ships. The movement has a slider arm on the threaded portion of the timing adjustment screw. This arm pulls or pushes the horizontal hair spring and makes the clock run faster or slower.
When the movement leaves the factory this arm is in the center of that threaded rod and is timed while the arm is at that location. During shipping it is possible for this arm to jump out of its center position and, in turn, make the timing out of whack.
The solution to this is to first just lift that timing arm with fingers and move it to the center of the threads again. This is where timing begins.
After it is in the center of the threads it will be pretty close in timing and only will need fine adjustment with the screw, moving it too the plus sign for faster, minus sign for slower.

Hello, I am attempting to figure out the age and authenticity of a clock I purchased. It is a bell clock on a wheel from a WW2 liberty class ship. I recently inherited a clock from my wife’s deceased mother, so far I’ve be able to get it running consistently and it now chimes 1/4 & hours correctly. It appears that at some point it was laid back so the movement had shifted enough to cause issues. (Hopefully) I’ve resolved that now. I’m interested in finding out the date of it, it’s not likely that the movement’s been replaced but I really don’t know the history and my wife doesn’t remember when her late father purchased it. The #’s stamped on the movement are; UW32-319H-01. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks! Mark.

The date codes are part of the numbers on the back plate of the movement itself. Not the stickers on the clock case or the paperwork.

I have what I believe is a Hermle clock movement that was made for Mason & Sullivan clock kits. The number stamped on the back of the movement is 3339x. The movement was dated 1984 and is no longer working. I would like to replace the movement, but need to know which hermle movement is correct. I found two movement, 131-080 and 131-081 18cm. Which of the two movements will replace the 3339x movement. Would appreciate any information that you can provide
Thank you,
Steve.
Please measure the shaft that the hands go onto, from the front plate of the movement itself and all the way out to the very end of the minute hand nut threads. This measurement will either be 32.3mm and if so get the 131-080, if it is 27mm get the 131-081
