Seth Thomas movement identification
Seth Thomas movement identification is a fairly easy process. ST clock movements have specific markings that identify them. Their fame began in the Antique days. They were known for making their own movements and clock cases. Of course, the craftsmanship was astounding. After the war era, they did not make anymore clock movements. Instead the use of Hermle clock movements began.
In the end
For the most part, the name Seth Thomas did not stay with one company very long after the war. The outcome of these takeovers are three types of Seth Thomas clock movements. The Antique Seth Thomas were in production during and long before WW2. The use of German units such as Hermle, as well as movements that operate by battery, also began post WW2 by Seth Thomas. Hermle clock movements are German made and of the highest quality. Clockworks offers these types of movements.
Is the clock an antique Seth Thomas?
There are a few ways to tell if the ST is an antique. The easiest way is if there are no pits in the movement plates. Please see the picture below. Notice the pattern on the outer plates. The antique Seth Thomas clock movements never had this design pattern on them. It will have ST with a circle around it for a logo. Additionally, the movement will say made in USA. They may also have a few numbers on it such as 89 or 124. It also means that it is not available new, and made before 1950. A repair would be the only option.

Modern Seth Thomas Movement Identification
The picture displays the small bumps, or pits, in the movement plates. This design on the Seth Thomas movement indicates some interesting things. In short, the date of the movement is between 1950 and 1979, and it was made in Germany. This also means have a good chance of getting a new movement from Clockworks. To get a new movement means the cost is a fraction of the price of an overhaul. It will also ship out right away. The clock will be running right away instead of months later. It is not possible to restore a clock movement so it is better than new. To order a new movement, match up the numbers on the Seth Thomas page. If questions please email us.
I have a Seth Thomas clock that has a Franz Hermle movement. The identifier on the movement is 1057-020. The only other information is NO (0) JEWELS, UNADJUSTED, MADE IN WEST GERMANY. There is a symbol at the top that looks kind of like an A but the cross bar is at the bottom and curved upward. I was trying to find this movement for sale but having no luck.
Please order the 1050-020 from this link
https://www.clockworks.com/product/new-1050-020-clock-movement-by-hermle
Look at the pic and also recheck the number. I think you will find you need 1050-020 because I never heard of 1057-020.

Hello, I have a Seth Thomas 89J and just got it working for the first time in almost 80 years. My question is at what time and how many times should it chime? It seems to be doing it quarterly on the hour but chimes what seems seems like over 100 times. Is this normal?
Not normal.

I have what I believe is a Seth Thomas Whitby from around 1923 that has a 48R stamped on the movement.. I’ve seen a Whitby in a ’22 catalog (with no mention of movement) and a ’26 catalog (where it is shown with a description of a 120 movement), but I haven’t been able to see any catalog with a 48R. The 48R also seems to have parts that look like they’re from a 51 movement. I got an very expensive repair estimate so I was wondering about just swapping an identical (or similar enough) working movement?
Got a pic of this one?

ok, I have a vintage seth thomas exeter-e clock and I’ve had it plugged in for quite a while, today when I walked into my room (which is where it’s plugged in, of course) I heard a rather loud noise, one that had never been there before. it’s a higher pitch than the sound the electricity moving through it makes (or maybe that’s the gears moving I’m not sure) and it’s much louder, not something I can just tune out, and it’s a constant noise. I’ve unplugged it but when I plug it in the issue persists. I’ve unscrewed the back plate off to see the inside to see if I could see any immediate problems, but I’m not a mechanic. I would upload a video if I could but the site doesn’t allow for it.
TL;DR – seth thomas clock is making new loud constant noise, please help.
The motor / movement is giving out and is no more. Its not made anymore either. Not much to do but get a new clock.

I picked up a beautiful Seth Thomas today at an estate sale and am trying to figure out what size key I need.
It doesn’t have a movement type stamped in the back, but it does have an ink stamp of ‘4702’ on the door, and then on the right side of the movement back plate there is another stamp of ‘4702’ and then directly above that is ‘4506’
Is this from 45 or 47? And what kind of movement is it? And most importantly what key do I need for winding and time keeping adjustment?

Thanks for the information. I did see the Germany stamp in the wooden case. The clock was given to me by my grandmother about 40 years ago, and she had it in her living room for years before that. I remember listening to the clock strike when I was young and being fascinated by it. I am now 73, so I am wondering about your comment of the piece being made only 40 years ago.
If a German made ST, it was made on or after 1968

James, your knowledge of clocks far surpasses mine, as I’m new to the hobby of collecting and repairing them. But I’m unsure whether your statement about the timing of German ST’s is accurate. I have a Brookfield 5W with an A205-001 movement marked “Made in Germany for Seth Thomas Clocks”. The movement is also stamped with a 5610 code (October, 1956?). The clock label is stamped “5805” (May, 1958?). And that label shows addresses for “Seth Thomas Clocks Division of General Time Corporation” in “New York 13, N.Y.” and “San Francisco 5, Cal.” That are old USPOD “postal zones”. They were replaced when the U.S. Zip Code system took effect in 1963. Even allowing for the possibility that the company took some time to use up its inventory of old-style labels, my impression is that this clock was manufactured in the late 1950’s. This seems consistent with another author’s statement that “In 1955, a flood badly damaged the Seth Thomas factory. They phased out movement manufacturing and began importing many movements from Germany. Hermle, in the Black forest of Germany, has made many movements for Seth Thomas clocks.” https://www.clockguy.com/SiteRelated/SiteReferencePages/SethThomasHistory.html
Thanks for the wealth of information you provide us all. I hope this tidbit is useful.

Questions:
1) How to you adjust speed?
2) how to set the correct date, day of week, and month on the small dials?
Much appreciation……Ken
Up with the pendulum bob is faster, reverse is slower, by turning the nut on the bottom
Date / week / month are set by just turning it with fingers to whatever is correct

Thank you.
But no pendulum, just rotating horizontal balance wheel( here is rear view)
What about the small port around one o’clock number( smaller than the 3 larger ones which the key turns)—does this regulate the speed?
Really appreciate your expertise…………..Ken
That small weight on the top of the balance wheel, and its fingers that go to rub the wheel, all this slides toward the plus sign or minus to slow or speed time.
That movement is still made today, that one is the old style it maybe time to replace the movement if giving issues. These units are 25 year movements at best typically and now have a new balance style for ease of time adjusting.
That style is not easy to get to time perfect so they changed the design

= no, not sure what that does. Maybe it is another way to set the date

I have a Seth Thomas Windham Strike, Catalog number 1762A, Model number 1762-001, movement number A036-016 840. Do you have a replacement movement for this? Thanks for your help!!
That clock is no longer made, we can restore the movement instead. The clock is nice, it depends if you like the clock or not really. If we restore it, it will remain a true antique and preserved. We can clean / oil / inspect the movement for only $200 and let you know how many bushings / pivot work so forth it needs and quote from there. If you are fine with the quote we will restore it to its fullness, if not liking the quote you get a cleaned and oiled movement back to you and know exactly what is up with it, for only $200 plus shipping. We would only need the movement alone and nothing else. No weights / dial / pendulum / hands needed.
We have the best tooling available, cleaning equipment, and cleaning solutions. There is no expense spared by us when it comes to having the best equipment. With this factor and 3 generations of clock repair expertise, you can rest assured your clock works will be in the best hands it can be in. I have a Seth Thomas #3 regulator by the Ball Watch Co. I recently moved and the movers lost the crank style key. My grandson just overwound the weight so it’s now jammed. So, two questions. I found a key for sale, for a #2 regulator. Will it fit? And, can I unjam the weight?
ST loved size 7 key, that is most likely the size. As far as the weight stuck, if adding weight temporarily so it works just until it comes down more usually solves. If cable driven / rope driven, be sure this did not jump off the spool it spins around, or not double crossing itself either.

I have a Seth Thomas Adamantine Mantle clock (stenciled “0091”on the bottom, which I believe means manufactured in 1900?) It was my great grandmothers so the date would seem correct). It is missing the pendulum suspension spring rod (I have the pendulum bob). The mechanism is marked 3-5/8, which I understand is the “drop” or the distance from the center wheel to the bottom of the pendulum bob. Is that correct? I’m in search of a replacement pendulum spring rod, or if I can find a longer rod and modify it, provided I know how properly re-size it. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

The clock movement you have requires specific parts that are no longer manufactured or available. In such cases, a custom solution or modification to existing components would be necessary. Alternatively, we can try to find a match from our inventory of spare parts.

I am not really interested in restoring it as its value to me comes more from where I received it. I am also not to concerned that it keeps perfect time only that it is approximate. I also found that the hammer for the alarm gong has apparently broken off from the pivot as it is missing also. I would be interested in just finding a suitable replacement for both the pendulum bob and for the hammer.

Hello. I just received a Seth Thomas grandfather clock, that I believe is either 1960s or possibly late 1980s and trying to date. It has a German-made Jauch movement No A407-000. Under the stamped (into the plate) name “Jauch” there is the number 96 and on the printed label it says “Made in Germany for Seth Thomas; Thomaston, CONN, USA”. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Fred
Fred – ignore my post below – I missed the part that you said it was a Grandfather clock. I can not say how they were stamped. Sorry
Check what is stamped again Fred. The reason I say that is in 1950 Westclox and Seth Thomas mergerd under a holding company “General Time”. After that the back plates were reportedly stamped “Made in Germany for Seth Thomas a Division of General Time”. In 1970 Talley Industries did a hostile takeover of General Time and the plates were then stamped “Made in Germany for Seth Thomas a Division of Talley Industries”. In 1982 Talley ordered the closing of the Conneticut clockworks and moved everything to Athens, GA. IN 1988 General Time was bought back by stockholders – it went out of business in 2001. Colibri got the Seth Thomas stuff. It is now owned by Alliance Time and they are throwing the Seth Thomas name on everthing they can.
1970s most likely. Now obsolete but we have the conversion kit at this link

I have an old Seth Thomas “Royal Seth” mantle clock – from the Talley years. It has a Hermle 1050-020 movement from my research. I cleaned the movement with a spray acetone electronics cleaner spray to remove the build up of old oil on it. (Looked like someone had sprayed it with WD40). I then lubricated it with Liberty synthetic clock oil. I ran it for a week prior to cleaning it and it actually kept good time. Now, it runs slow – about 5 min per day. The speed adjustment is all the way to + side. Any idea what could be causing it to run slow? I’ve worked on clocks before and always had good luck bringing them back to life – but I’m clocksmith. Hello,
I have a SETH THOMAS #A208-005 7003 that runs fast after fully winding… Gains about 3mins every hour.. it will slow down after a few days of running but speeds back up when the 8day comes around and it is time to wind again. I have been trying to find a clean picture of the balance wheel because i can not seem to locate the tabs above the wheel to adjust to slow the clock down. do you happen to have a pictre i can use? or have any idea what the tabs look? or instructions on how to adjust? Any help would be great thanks in advance for your support.
Timing a balance clock movement
Balance Clock Movement Timing is done fairly easy. There are three types of clock balance movement styles post 1950. This section is for those balance units that do not have a platform escapement.
The platform escapement can be read about in another section. These notes are only for the larger balance wheel in the top center of the clock movement.
For example, movements in the Urgos 6/ series and many of the Hermle clock movements. Hermle movements such as 340-020 and 350-020. Out of these, two styles, the old style and then the new style.
Use of the old style was all through the 70’s and 80’s and 90’s. Around this time there was a switch to the new style on the Hermle units. By this time the Urgos units were out of production.
The old style
The old style is one with a round spring that goes up and down (Vertical). It goes in a circle around the center arbor of the balance wheel. In this style there is a slide arm with a tiny weight on the balance wheel itself. There is a + and – on the wheel. To speed up time go towards the plus sign.
However this style is not always easy to regulate and can be very hard to get it perfect. The factory has special devices to make it perfect. However it’s not that easy on the customer end with this style balance. For this reason it has been improved upon during future manufacturing.
If the old style balance then the clock movement has some age to it. If this is the situation it is just best to replace the unit with the new one. Clockworks offers the movement brand new with the new style balance for less than the cost of a cleaning.
The clock movement has lasted 25 years or more. In theory the new unit should last more than this with the improved aspects.
The new style
The non pendulum units offered on this page all have the new and improved balance assemblies. Despite the change on the balance, these units are a direct fit and will install in the clock case the exact same way as the old unit.
If the numbers match from the old unit to the numbers offered on this page, than the movement will be the exact same. It will be the same as it is now but brand new and with the improved balance.
The improved upon balance units have a different kind of hairspring (Horizontal). It will also have a screw to regulate it rather than a slider arm. The regulator screw is on the back of the movement near the balance.
There is a + and – sign next to it meaning fast or slow. If the clock needs to be faster to keep time then the screw would be turned to the plus and opposite for slowing time.
The factory times the balance movement before the new movement ships. The movement has a slider arm on the threaded portion of the timing adjustment screw. This arm pulls or pushes the horizontal hair spring and makes the clock run faster or slower.
When the movement leaves the factory this arm is in the center of that threaded rod and is timed while the arm is at that location. During shipping it is possible for this arm to jump out of its center position and, in turn, make the timing out of whack.
The solution to this is to first just lift that timing arm with fingers and move it to the center of the threads again. This is where timing begins.
After it is in the center of the threads it will be pretty close in timing and only will need fine adjustment with the screw, moving it too the plus sign for faster, minus sign for slower.

I have a Seth Thomas, 8 day, quarter hour chime mantle clock, and I’d like to know if anyone could date it. Its in excellent condition.
What are the numbers off of the back plate of the clock movement itself? If it is hard to get to, usually you can stick a cell phone up behind the movement and get a picture of the numbers. Or through the side access panel if there is one.

Hello!
I have the same question.
The logo on the plate (which is smooth) is ST in a diamond within a circle (upper left). On the lower left is the number 89J.
The label is shot except for part of the word Sentinal an what I believe is part of a 7.
The hands have an S and a T at their bases (S on min a T on hour).
I picked this up at (of all places) a car junk yard and it’s in pretty sad shape. I’m trying to decide if I should leave it be (is it special…or more special) or if I can be comfortable repairing the case myself.
That one is a true Seth Thomas made in CT USA, an 8 day time / strike spring driven unit made 1930s – 1940s mostly.
Should the case be fixed? Up to you, not sure from here

This is more of a comment as I just came into an OB McClintock bank clock that was turned into a Grandfather clock of sorts. I have a friend that works on clocks and he just basically cleaned and oiled the movement which is a Seth Thomas 85A, he says 1917. My wife saw it an estate sale down the road. The clock has been running over a month now and keeps perfect time. It looks original ( aside from the added base ) with the stained glass door and 2 locking mechanisms for the door. It used to have electricity hooked up to it to run the banks chimes which were separate. Enjoying your website.
Thanks for sharing Paul !
Sounds nice

Hello James, I am a collector of ship’s clocks from Germany. I have purchased an old Seth Thomas ship’s clock and would like to repair it. Can you tell me how old the clock is? The seller told me the watch came from his family and was from around 1880. Thank you Bernd
Hi,
Not sure really on that one but it will be after 1853 and before 1932, so it maybe is accurate when saying 1880

I have a Seth Thomas grandfather clock. It has a Franz Hermle 451-050 H 85cm/70.777 movement. The letters AD is stamped above the Franz Hermle name. It says NO (0) Jewels, unadjusted and Made in Germany. The only other marks on the clock is a white tag with the number 987. The clock has 3 weights. How can I tell about how old my clock is?
By you saying ST Hermle, puts that movement over 45 years old as that is how long ago Seth Thomas worked with Hermle.
Time for a new one.
Please order the 451-050 85cm from this link

How do I get a Seth Thomas clock started after it has been in storage for 40 years? It is a Country Cottage model with Catalog Number 1209 (1209-000). Movement is A206-012. See attached pictures for clarity. I look forward to your reply and thank you very much.

I live in Australia. I have two Seth Thomas wall clocks which I bought at auction 32 years ago. Both have run flawlessly until recently. I know nothing about them but I believe they are antique. The Octagonal railway/school wall clock looks to be the older of the two and recently stopped running. It is marked ST surrounded by a diamond and an outer circle. It is followed by the inscription “MADE IN THE USA AMERICA”. Bottom left it is also marked below the winder 8 1/4.
I have removed the movement from it’s case. The only other mark I found anywhere was a pencil incription on the back of the case KE958?
Can anyone tell me the age of this Seth Thomas clock? I’m thinking first decade of the 20th century? I would like to be able to find a replacement escape wheel (40 tooth approx 32mm diameter) plus the correct Verge for the clock. Thank you so much for any help you may be able to provide
It would be made between 1850 and 1940.
The only way to correct the escape wheel is to get a junk movement for parts, or correct the one that exists.
No parts are made for that unit.

I am looking for a replacement movement or parts for a Seth Thomas marked 4 5/8. Any ideas on a part number?
Hi,
Whatever it is it is required in parts for that clock movement is no longer made or available.
Something custom would be made or modification to that what does exist. Or we would need to match it up to one of our own parts units.
If you would like to send it in for restoration, we could figure it all out here, along with the restoration process.
Are you interested in sending the movement only?
