1161 Hermle Clock Movement Notes
The 1161 Hermle Clock Movements are great that is why there is so many made. They work night and day for 30 years without much complaint. So here is some information on these fine German made units.
Names on the Movement
The name maybe a number of makers on the movement, but it was made by Hermle not them. It may say Howard Miller, or Ridgeway, or Sligh, or many other names. If the number on the clock movement starts with 1161- its really made by the Hermle company. They let these companies to have there name on the movement instead of Hermle.
Chain or Cable Drive
This movement was made in both cable driven and also chain driven styles. The 1161-853 is the most popular and the most produced Grandfather clock movement in the world. When ordering a new movement it will come with the chains or cables with the pulleys.
Hermle movement 1161-853 Clock Weights
This clock movement takes three clock weights to run. The weights should be close to 8 or 10lbs, and does not have to be exact. Even though it does not have to be the exact weight, here is the exact weight specification from the factory. If the pendulum bob is less than 8 1/2 inches wide, it will take two at 7.7LBS and one at 9.9LBS. If the pendulum bob is 8 1/2 inches in diameter or larger, it takes two weights at 9.9LBS and one at 7.7LBS. Often they will have a 10 1/2 inch bob with the two at 7.7 and one at 9.9 and the customer says it ran 30 years like that.
Weight Placement
The placement for the clock weights on this series is the following. The heavy weight will go on the right as facing the clock if one heavy and two light. If there is two heavy weights and one light weight, the light one will go on the left as facing the clock. So what this means is the middle time train weight is variable light or heavy depending on pendulum bob diameter.1161 Hermle Clock Movement Songs
This is a triple chime unit that plays out a melody on the quarter hours and then on the top of the hour it will strike out whatever times the hour is. The songs this one plays choice of the following. Westminster, Saint Micheal, or Wittington and also a silent option. For an additional cost is it able to have an auto night shut off switch (ANSO), this will make the clock quiet from 10pm to 7am on its own without intervention.
The Support
Please note the factory will give a three year warranty. However we are clock makers here at Clockworks.com and we have been doing this sort of thing for a long time in this family (over 100 years of experience). If have questions or concern in whatever amount of time, we are not going to turn down a response, we answer whatever questions even a decade later, it really does not matter. We take care of our customers in whatever way we can. The movement comes with instructions and any questions beyond the instructions can be emailed, chatted, or called in.

About Hermle Clock Movements
Hermle clock movements are among the finest movements made in the modern times. The German made Hermle units typically work night and day for 30 years without much complaint.
To go and get it restored like normally would with any clock after a long time, it is found that is cost is high. This is for good reason as it can be a large task to restore it.
But as seen, since its a modern day unit (Post War German) it can be available new for a very good price.
Get a new movement instead of a fixed up old one, get it in 3 days instead of 6 months. Save hundreds of dollars doing it also.

Movement grades
All the Hermle clock movements Clockworks offers is the best grade. In other words there are a couple styles some units have that are not as good as others. There are various movements that have more than one grade.
Some units can have plastic for the hour hand tube and the next wheel down, instead the better brass. Meanwhile the number is the same for both grades. In other words there is the economy grade and there is the full grade, on some movement series.
Please know that Clockworks will only ship the best grade Hermle clock movements available, every time.

What will be received
Each one of the these fine Hermle clock movements come already oiled, will come with the hand nut also.
If it is a pendulum style clock, it will come with the suspension spring and the pendulum hanger (leader).
If its a weight driven clock, it will come with new chains or cables and with pulleys.
So this will be the movement with its hammer assemble on.
This is the complete movement that comes out of the clock. No weights, pendulum, chime block, hands, dial all this is already present usually.
Upon ordering Hermle Clock Movements
When placing an online order a receipt will be emailed provided the correct email address is entered. If no receipt, please check the spam folder for the receipt from us.
On the receipt is the link to click for the instructions for the product. The Hermle clock movements ships from Huntington, MA 01050 USA and sometimes from other locations also. The movements go out the next business day unless there is something we have to do to it such as a regear.
The Hermle clock movement ships out UPS or sometimes FedEx. Movements rarely ship via USPS unless there is a special request or an international customer.
Hermle Clock Movement Identification
Most important is the identification of the Hermle clock movement and it requires locating the numbers on the back plate of the movement itself.
This can be done by removing access panels, sticking a phone inside and taking a picture, or even a mirror. Use any possible means to get the number of the Hermle clock movement. This information is not in the manual that came with the clock or on the wood case.
On the back plate of the Hermle clock movement there are numbers such as 451-050 94 cm. These numbers indicate everything there is to know about that particular mechanical Hermle clock movement.
Identification is the first step
In order to purchase a new Hermle clock movement, the old number has to match up with the new one. In short, the new movement will be exactly the same.
It is not a knock off. Generally speaking, all of the existing clock components will fit the new movement. Proper identification of the Hermle clock movement is important when troubleshooting, ordering parts, or discussing compatible components.
Thus, when contacting us it is imperative to correctly reference the number on the backplate of the movement. If there is any confusion, send us a picture of the back plate, as close and as clear as possible, and we can help identify which Hermle clock movement is needed.
A new Hermle clock movement is best
To clarify, as previously discussed in several sections, a new Hermle clock movement is always best. A new unit is a fraction of the price of an overhaul.
The clock will be up and running much faster than waiting months for an overhaul to be completed. The new Hermle clock movement will last another 30 years. This is not possible with a restored unit.

Mechanical Clock Movement Wear
Mechanical clock movement wears out after years go by because the oil turns solid. With age, the mechanical clock movement's oil solidifies and becomes black and sticky.
By the time 20 or 30 years go by, the oil has solidified and is creating wear on the brass plates of the movement. So, when this happens, the clock movement will not run correctly.
This is when the movement will need a cleaning at least, or be replaced. Of course, a brand new movement is always the best option.
What wear and where
Look at the old clock movement, and see holes in the brass plates where there are small pivot arbors sticking into these holes. These pivots are what the gears of the clock ride upon and as the pivots spin in the solidified oil, this makes the holes oblong instead of round.
With the pivot holes oblong, the holes are pinching the pivots and creating resistance in the gear train. With the solidified oil and the pinched pivots, the clock will eventually stop working or chiming.
Invisible clock movement wear
This wear takes place in the holes that are in the brass plates and is hard to identify sometimes. These holes in the brass plates become oblong instead of round and this pinches the pivot arbor going into it. Between this, and the solid oil, the clock ceases to function.
To have this repaired is an expensive and long process. To have a mechanical movement serviced can cost two times as much or even three times the amount of the new one.
However, once the movement starts having problems due to the oblong pivot holes, something will need to be done. The clock will never stay running otherwise.
New Clock Movement Benefits
New clock movement benefits far outweigh the benefits of a restoration. This section will explain why that is and what the best course of action is to get your clock working.
Servicing the movement
Clocks need to have fresh oil after 10 years or so. Then, after 20 or 30 years, a full break down of the movement is necessary. This is all well and good and can be done with the old movement.
The movement will run for another 5 or 15 years with no issues but then it will be time to do it again. So obviously this is a new clock movement benefit.
Every time the movement needs to have work done on it or needs bushings, it will last less and less time before it needs attention again. So another new clock movement benefit is that this would not happen.
The repair process is expensive because it takes time to separate the plates, remove all the gears, do the necessary work, and then put them all back together again.
This process may need to be redone if not perfect the first time. The turn around time to complete an overhaul on a clock movement could be anywhere from 1 to 3 months, and in some extreme cases, a year.
It is a slow moving venture that costs twice as much as a new movement would. If a new clock movement is not available, then this is the best, and only, way to handle a clock repair.
Replacing with a new clock movement
If the clock movement is still in production, it is far better to just get the new clock movement. Mass production makes the movement so affordable it will cost a fraction of the price of the repair work.
The new clock movement will be the same one but brand new and ready to run 30 years without much complaint. There is absolutely no way to repair an old clock movement so that it is better than new.
Even the best clockmaker using the best equipment cannot make the clock movement better than a new one.
A new clock movement is a factory fresh restart. The clock will be like it was originally when you first made the purchase from the store. The new clock movement will be made by the same people, with the same machines, and the clock movement is the same.
It is not a close replica or made somewhere else besides Germany. It is the same movement. Not a knock off or replica. So wouldn't it make sense to get the new clock movement instead of chasing the old?
The choice is clear and obvious. The new movement will cost a fraction of the price and the clock is up and running in no time.
Movements That Would Need a Repair or an Overhaul
If a new clock movement is not possible, then a repair is most likely the only option. However we will try to convert it to a new clock movement that is close and easy to adapt.
If it is not an easy one to adapt, or would take too much case work, then the best solution is to have us work on it. Another clock movement to consider having restored instead of replacing it is the tubular bell, which is a high end movement.
The price of a tubular bell new clock movement makes an overhaul more attractive. This is due to the high price on the new clock movements which is over $1600.
Usually the price is less for the new unit but instead these new clock movements are more costly than the overhaul by Clockworks anyway.
We can charge a much lower amount for the complete overhaul on these units. Ultimately the choice is yours. There is a good argument in both directions that makes sense on these expensive new clock movements.
Clockworks = The best repair service
We would love to do the clock movement overhaul here at Clockworks and we do the best job. There are two ways to fix clocks; the easy way and the hard way. We only repair clock movements the hard way with no short cuts.
Even with new clock movements, we inspect them and make sure all is well before shipping them out. It is even more important for us to do your repair than another company because we do not go to your house. There is no one being intrusive in your home and possibly damaging your clock case.
The clock movement itself is the only item that gets sent to us. No components need to be sent since we have everything else here such as weights, dials and pendulums. It is a great advantage to have Clockworks work on your clock movement for this fact alone.
A clock supply depot such as us does not need to wait for parts. We possess everything we could possibly need to complete a thorough, professional clock repair right here. If a new clock movement is not possible, then this repair is your best and only option.
The new movement
New clock movement benefits usually do indeed outweigh the repair option. The movement will already have lubrication with clock oil so there is no need to oil it.
The new clock movement comes with cables and pulleys, or chains, the leader, and suspension spring.
This is everything that comes out when you remove the two screws that are under the clock movement, besides the dial and weights.
Once you get the hands and the clock dial out of the way (instructions are sent via email) it's only a matter of removing the two screws from underneath.
The new clock movement can then be put in by someone with experience in 10 or 15 minutes. A person with no experience will take longer, but the point is that it isn't hard to do. This is definitely a new clock movement benefit.
There are some instances where a clock case was made in an annoying way that makes it more difficult, but for clock movements that were in a mass production this is not the situation. This relates more to a few individual clockmakers who's design of the case makes it more tricky to get the new clock movement in or out.
Summary of New Clock Movement Benefits
A new clock movement is typically less than half the cost of an overhaul.
It will also be on its way to the customer instantly instead of months later. A new clock movement will last the longest of any other choice.
Hermle Clock Movement Aliases
Hermle produces clock movements but the use of aliases is quite prevalent. The movement could have a stamp with any name but really it will be made by Hermle.
Some companies bought so many movements that they were able to get their name on the movement instead of Hermle. The following is only a partial list of names that could be on the clock movement.
The best Aliases in Disguise
Seth Thomas and Mason and Sullivan had not only their name, but also their own internal numbering system.
Their stamp and number was on the movement instead of the Hermle number. Since it is not a Hermle number, the number would need to have a conversion to the real number. Correspondingly, this is done with the Mason and Sullivan chart, or the Seth Thomas conversion Chart.
However the Seth Thomas chart is not very accurate, please see instructions on that page.
Best to replace the movement
It is best to replace the clock movement if either of these names are on the movement automatically. Of course, do not have to think and decide if a repair is better, the answer is a simple no. These companies went out of business a long ago and the life of the unit is over.
Ordinarily, the lifetime is 25 - 30 years before it needs an overhaul or replacement. In fact, if ST or Mason Sullivan is on the movement that would indicate the clock is about 40 years old or more.
The other Hermle Clock Movement Aliases are easy
All in all, Hermle Clock Movement Aliases on other clocks use only their name, and not their own internal numbering system on the Hermle movements. So basically if the clock is of post war German origin just look at the number and forget the name.
Additionally, the numbers will indicate what movement it is. If it is a Hermle movement there are 3 or 4 digits then a hyphen, and then 3 more digits. For example, 1161-853 or 340-020 or 351-060. If the numbers look like this it is made by Hermle.

Hermle Clock Movement Directory Explanation
Above all, a Hermle Clock Movement Directory is to get to the correct page that contains the clock movement. This is an important first step when ordering a new clock movement.
Thus, Hermle mechanical movements have numbers on the back plate starting with the below few numbers.
Then a dash (-) follows and then some more numbers. For example: 340-020 131-070 1161-853 351-020 and so forth.
So, if the clock says something like 1161-053 drop the second half and click the 1161 button below. Then this will go to the page where the 1161-053 is as well as the rest of the 1161 series.

If Not Listed
If the Hermle clock movement is not found on these pages we may still have it as a conversion or we may be able to create it out of what exists. However, we need to know the movement number.
So please email the movement number. Of course a picture of the back plate is also helpful. Moreover, if the movement numbers do not look like the Hermle movement numbers it may be made by someone else.
Additionally, the mechanical movement identification page will assist with determining who made the clock. In any event, this is for post WW2 modern mechanical clock movements made in Germany only.

1161-853 Hermle Clock Movement
1161-853 Hermle Clock Movement is a triple chime cable driven unit with three weights. This is a rectangle shaped movement with the movement plate size of 140 x 200mm and takes a size #8 crank (If cable). The shaft that the hands go onto is 53.2 mm from the front plate of the movement and all the way out to the end of the minute hand nut threads. How the 1161-853 gets shipped
What is being offered on this page is the movement only with out the pendulum, gong or dial. This high quality German movement comes oiled and includes its leader, suspension spring and hand nut. Also included the preinstalled cables and pulleys for the weights.1161-853 Winder arbor option clarification
Hermle clock company at one point changed the 1161-853 to have the winders straight across from each other instead of the middle winder down about one inch. This was how it was for a few years and alot of movements sold. After some time they went back to having the middle winder down from the other two, the way it was in the past. With this middle winder down configuration back in play, this stuck and there was no more units available with the winders straight across to be had for a very long time. However this created an issue with replacement movements for the old style straight versions, because of the winding arbor pattern in the dial. It was required to get a new dial or drill a different hole in the current one. These days they have now put out the straight across version to resolve this issue and have them available for replacing these units. The cost is higher as they were created for this sole purpose and is not used for new clock manufacturing. See picture in the gallery of what the straight across version looks like.
Ordering a Hermle Clock Movement
To order a Hermle clock movement we need the numbers off of the back plate of the movement itself. Match the numbers up so the new movement will be exactly the same as the old one.
Replacing the movement is a fraction of the price of a repair. It is also the fastest way to get the clock up and running again.

Clock movement removal and installation
Removing and installing the clock movement requires the most basic tools. All of the Hermle clock movements are in stock and ship immediately. We are full time clock makers and retailers.
This means we can help from start to finish. If needing assistance in picking out the correct Hermle clock movement, installation or troubleshooting, we can help. Please do not hesitate to ask.

Matching the CM when ordering a Hermle Clock Movement
This note only applies if the current Hermle clock movement has a pendulum. Please match up the CM length from the back plate of the old unit to the new one.
The options in the drop down menu ultimately indicate stock items that are available. However, if there is a CM number that is needed and is not listed, we can usually create it by changing some gears. If this is the situation please give us a call.
There is an extra fee for regearing the movement. Usually this is an additional fee of $100.

Conclusion
Replacing a clock movement is less costly than an overhaul. The movement will last another 25 years before needing any work. Since it is still in production, and offered at a very reasonable price, it makes sense to replace the movement. The clock will be problem free right away, instead of months.
Plus it will inevitably last longer than an even the best overhaul. There is no way to restore better than a brand new movement. So please make the wise decision of replacing whenever possible.

Hi James – I’m working on planning a wall regulator using a 241 series cable driven movement. Can you tell me how much room is needed under the movement to allow for full travel of the weights?
I do not seem to have that answer.

Thanks for your speedy reply. Now, I have a follow up question with regard to my newly acquired Howard Miller 610-309 with a Hermle 1161-853 movement. The clock is running fast. Even with the nut on the bottom of the pendulum maxed out as far as it can go, the clock is exceeding 3600 bpm by a lot. Any ideas?
Sounds like a mismarked 114cm unit instead of 94cm maybe

I am going to order a mechanical unit for a replacement for a grandfather clock (Hermle 1161-853 HS), but I was wondering what the CM measurement means before ordering.
Pendulum length from the TOP of the movement and all the way down, with the lightest possible pendulum, approximately, to keep time. You only need to match up the CM stamp from the back of the old and order the same on the new unit.

I have a grandfather clock that keeps on stopping. This just started a couple of weeks ago. The movement is a Hermle 1161-853AS, 94cm. I have had the clock for over forty years. It was built from a kit I purchased from Viking clock. I cleaned it with your cleaning solution and oiled it, but it keeps on stopping. Due to the age of the clock would it be better to purchase a new movement rather than trying to have it repaired? If so what would that cost?
This is true !
Please select yours on this very same page for pricing

Do you know if you put the melody selector to silent if it only silences the melody or does it also silence the chime?
It turns off both the chime and the striking of the hours

James, I have a Ridgeway made in 1988 with the Hermle 1161-853BS movement. When I bought it, it didn’t come with a winding key and much of the info that I have found is a bit contradictory or just confusing. I’d like to buy a winding key to find out if the clock is operational and accurate before ordering a replacement movement but I don’t know what size key to get. I believe that it’s most likely a #8 but I’m not sure. Do you sell the winding keys or cranks?
Hi,
Need a crank instead of a key for that one. Size 8, this link

I need a 1161-853 and I want the auto night silence option. How do I order this?
Hi,
That option is on the drop down list and indicated by the acronym ANSO. Stands for Auto Night Shut Off

I have a 100 cm pendulum and your drop down does not show the ANSO as an option at that length. What can I do to get the night silence option
The 1161-853 100cm is not available with ANSO sorry to say.

Thanks for the info, but these clock kits come with the clock face which I do not need. Is there a kit that does not include the clock face?
Hi,
Yes we can modify whatever is required for your custom tailored clock kit. We can discount if a dial is not needed. Please give us a call at 800 381 7458 for assistance and pricing.

Hello I have a Howard Miller 63rd Anniversary Grandfather clock that has stopped working. The movement is 1161-853BS, 114cm/60, what movement is the replacement and does it make a difference if it has a moon dial?
Thank you
Makes no difference at all. If the clock has a phase of the moon now, it is only one gear on the same tube as the hour hand that will need to be transferred to the new unit.

Hello, I am finishing up a clock kit I started in 1987. I put it aside after finishing the cabinet because I could not afford the 9 tube movement. I still can’t so I have purchased a 1161-853csk/114 movement awhile back new. I am curious what the csk means.

Thank you James My winding has a dropped winder. It also has on the back plate where the winding shaft comes through a small square plate with two screws and the shaft goes into that plate as though it is a bearing. This hole in the small plate where the shaft protrudes though seems to be egg shaped. I was wanting to know if That plate can be purchased or bushed.
No, but it is best to get the new clock movement instead anyway. If the bushings are oblong the pivots are worn most likely and its just chasing your own tail at that point. A new movement comes oiled with instructions and support.
James
I have a franz-hermie 1161-853 hs what is the pendulum length in mm
Under the 1161-853 number, there is a CM stamp. This is the pendulum length from the top of the clock movement and all the way down to the bottom of the pendulum rating nut threads.
https://www.clockworks.com/product/new-1161-853-clock-movement-by-hermle
It varies depending on the weight of the pendulum itself, but this CM number is for the lightest pendulum or you can say the smallest bob diameter. Gets longer, bigger, from there.
James
What is the CM number off of that back plate where it says that 1161 number?
James

Yes it does, at the 3 clock mark.
James
Thank you !

Hi, I have a Hermle It says on the back plate Black Forest Clocks ,Made in the USA It is a 1161-853BS 114cm over 60 . It has a second hand at the top on the front face.Is your 1163-853 the right one to replace it with? Thank You John
Yes indeed. And also every 1161 has the second hand sweep option, just not all dials are equipped with the hole and indicator.
Please order the 1161-853 from this link https://www.clockworks.com/product/new-1161-853-clock-movement-by-hermle

I have a 1161-853 A Does the A mean it has the auto beat feature that sets the beat automatically?
It will be Autobeat with or without the A
will 1171-850 fit the face that 1161-853 was removed from…
No
This question may seem redundant but the movement number in Ridgeway clock is 1161-853-BS. Is this also the same movement?
Yes, ignore the BS so to speak.

I have a 1987 Pearl clock with an 1161-853 B 94 cm 66 beat movement. It has no second hand arm (nor does the dial have a hole for a second hand arm), nor any provision for one. Which movement would I order to get a replacement that does not have the second hand arm?
Hi
All the 1161’s can have a second hand, even yours. Some dials have the seconds, others do not. All the second hand function is, is an extended post on the escape gear. The pivot is extended out beyond the front plate some, so the end of the second bit can ride on it.
So anyway the movement needed will be the 1161-853 at this link https://www.clockworks.com/product/new-1161-853-clock-movement-by-hermle Ignore the seconds, or no seconds aspect.

Will this movement work if my Seth Thomas grandfather clock has the 3 weight windups horizontally in a row and NOT in a “V” shape arrangement ?
(Hope this makes sense🤨). TY
No that one needed is a special order. It is the price of the regular 1161-853 and then add $70 additional for the special straight winder movement.
Would you like to order this one? I can make a special link
James
I need a movement replacement for a Howard Miller with a 1161-853M.2 movement ID. Does the M.2 have a significance, or will this 1161-853 Hermle movement be the correct replacement? Thank you.
The straight up 1161-853 will be the same as you have now. Providing the middle winder on your current movement is down some from the others, as opposed to having all the winders straight across.

Seems basic, but mine that needs replacing is a Hermle 1161-853 BSK, is this the right replacement part?
Yes this is the same unit. All your parts such as pendulum and weights and dial will fit up the same as it always did.
Many Thanks !
