Kieninger clock movement identification
The identification process is the first step to replace a Kieninger clock movement or any other components. To begin with, start with the movement number in order to purchase a new clock movement and to see the price and what it includes.
Also, these numbers are essential to get compatible components for the clock. Examples of some components include pendulums, dials, hands, keys, cranks, chime blocks, mounting screws, weights, pulleys or chains.
Decoding Kieninger clock movements
For example, let’s say the movement numbers are 81 K 116cm.
- 1981 = If it is an on older unit, the 81 would be the year it was made. On new units this number is not the year but only an internal engineering code.
- K = The K is the movement series. This is the basic raw movement plate size and internal gear configuration.
- 116CM = This is the pendulum length, in centimeters, from the top of the movement all the way down to the bottom of the rating nut. This is true only for the smallest 4 1/2 inch bob diameter.

Dating the Kieninger movement
In the above description, 81 is the date, however this is not always true in later years. After a certain date that first number is no longer the date that it was made. Rather that first number became an engineering code that has nothing to do with the date.
So it may or may not be the date code, ignore this as it is not pertinent to replacing the unit. There is no longer a solid way to date the Kieninger clock movement unless there is a stamp on the back plate.
We can help
The new movement will fit into the clock case just as the old one did. Keep using the same components such as the dial, pendulum, chime block and weights.
If it is a weight driven clock it will come with the chime hammers as well as chains or cables. If this decoding process is confusing, just email the numbers or a picture to us. We are happy to help with figuring out the best course of action. Similarly, Kieninger clock movement questions and ordering can be done by phone as well.
Good evening.
My Westminster chime grandmother clock is not making any noise on the hour or on the 1/4hour. I am not sure why. It tells the time ok.
The unit has the stamp of the Kieninger name and then 7980 under the name on the left hand side. On the right side is says 80 but nothing else?
Any idea which model this might be so that I can find instructions on how to make it strike and chime please?
Thankyou.
Is this one chain driven or cable driven?

It uses a key to wind up springs.
There is also a single lever on the left hand side of the movement, when looking from the back, it lifts something up and down, although doesn’t stay where you put it, but returns to the same position.
I assumed this to be a night silencing mode?? There are no labels for on/off as some instructions indicate, just the lever on its own.
I would attach a picture of the movement but I don’t know how to!
It maybe to lift the strike hammers back so it will chime the quarters only

I have a Kieninger clock: MS 001; 116cm; 354418; sn 2100971249 which is mounted in a Howard Miller grandfather clock. It’s been carefully moved several times, kept clean and oiled. Now the clock stops 3 or 4 minutes after chiming. This is a random event, mostly after the top of the hour. The minute hand gets “stuck.” Sometimes the clock will work for several hours at a time. What position should the “silver” colored levers be placed for operation that are located behind the face place? 2 are on the lower inside of the front brass plate and 2 are located on the top . I’m baffled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clock dies not have night shut off feature. Only Westminister on or off.
Most Kieninger K and M series has ANSO, but the dial may not have the slot for this. Either way, with it or without will fit the same as replacement.

I have z Keninger MS 001 116cm. 354418. It is totally out of sinc since moving. Clook keeps time but the chimes are all out of sinc. Sometimes the minute hand gets “stuck” and the clock stops. I see 4 metal levers on the brass frame. How should they be positioned? This may be the problem.

Hello! My friend and I have been trying for several months to find information about the clock that he discovered in his grandfather’s house and wants to restore. I am a student of the Faculty of History, and I have full responsibility for antiques. Could you tell me the year of manufacture of the watch with the engraving “original Kieninger 3827 43cm”? They also have an image of a gear and the letters J A K, but no other numbers or letters have been found.
J series was made approximately 1990 through 2010 about. It was not a good movement run, they had some issues it turned out.

I have a Kieninger KSU 68 movement that has triple chimes and twelve hammers. it plays the Westminster, Whittington, and green sleeves. I am looking for information on how to set up the sequence of the chime hammers, so they start out on the correct note
The easiest way to start off is the first quarter of westminster. If this first quarter is good, all songs are good. The first quarter of westminster goes down the line 1-2-3-4-5 whatever, from shortest rod to longest in order.

My daughter gave me a Mason Sullivan clock with a Kieninger 76, triple chime, 12 hammer, chain drive works for Father’s Day. I oiled the works and was successful in running it for the past three days. I now have three minor problems. The chimes run VERY fast. The four melody are a blur when they run. Is there a way to slow them down. Can the chime hammers be raised a little. I am using the on/off lever to raise them ever so slightly to get an acceptable tone. The last issue is the gears for the moon face drive do not mate. The gears on the clock or the moon disk are approx 1/32 to long, so they ride alongside of each other. I would like to find the correct gearing for this feature. I did remove the gear on the faceplate to stop the rubbing and potentially stopping the works. If these gear are original to the works, it has been doing this since new.
The moon gear, the movement, the dial, none of these things are made anymore. That movement is made in 1976 these are typically 40 year movements only before total rebuild or replacement is required. Suggestion is disconnect the moon, oil it, run it until it will not run, then get the conversion at this link for the new unit

I would like to purchase a replacement assembly, but need help with identification of my current clock works, and which to order. The information that is on the back of the works are

The clock is a Regulator, approximately 46 inches tall, with a pendulum and a single hammer chime

Ordered and replaced a KSU78 MOVEMENT (ORDER # 353095 summer ’23) . Works wonderfully. Last week, the hour strikes just never stopped. The movement would start chiming the hour correctly, but never stopped. Would go until weight reached the bottom of the clock.
Suggestions on where to look for this strange behavior?

Hello
I have a Kieninger mechanical mantle clock that is running fast, but I can’t figure out how to adjust the speed. I suspect it is the black metal toggle visible in the picture beneath the spring timing mechanism. However, when I tried to loosen the screw holding the toggle in place it would not budge. I am afraid to keep trying unless i am certain that is the correct adjustment point. Would you please let me know if this is correct or how to adjust the speed if it is something else? Thank you.
No, it is not the black bar with the screw. It would be a lever that pulls or pushes the hair spring instead. Cant see it from this pic.

I figured out the issue at my end. Here is a better picture, hopefully it shows what needs to be adjusted. Thank you.
Balance Clock Movement Timing is done fairly easy. There are three types of clock balance movement styles post 1950. This section is for those balance units that do not have a platform escapement.
The platform escapement can be read about in another section. These notes are only for the larger balance wheel in the top center of the clock movement.
For example, movements in the Urgos 6/ series and many of the Hermle clock movements. Hermle movements such as 340-020 and 350-020. Out of these, two styles, the old style and then the new style.
Use of the old style was all through the 70’s and 80’s and 90’s. Around this time there was a switch to the new style on the Hermle units. By this time the Urgos units were out of production.
The old style
The old style is one with a round spring that goes up and down (Vertical). It goes in a circle around the center arbor of the balance wheel. In this style there is a slide arm with a tiny weight on the balance wheel itself. There is a + and – on the wheel. To speed up time go towards the plus sign.
However this style is not always easy to regulate and can be very hard to get it perfect. The factory has special devices to make it perfect. However it’s not that easy on the customer end with this style balance. For this reason it has been improved upon during future manufacturing.
If the old style balance then the clock movement has some age to it. If this is the situation it is just best to replace the unit with the new one. Clockworks offers the movement brand new with the new style balance for less than the cost of a cleaning.
The clock movement has lasted 25 years or more. In theory the new unit should last more than this with the improved aspects.

Hi James I have sligh grandfather clock with a kieninger 02 k 116cm…..I found this clock at a salvage yard for $150…..the case cleaned up beautifully albeit with at few blemishes..
With the works, I noticed that the cables were overlapping on the drums, I was able to release the drum lock and remove cables, upon reinstalling cables on drum and winding to the overwind lock, I have about a 7” cable loop with the weight wheel on under the movement, is this too long or do I need to adjust the overwind gear to allow the the weights to travel closer to the clock works base? What would the correct distance
I cleaned and oiled as you have suggested here on your excellent website…..clock is working amazingly.
Sorry to be long winded! Appreciate your insight
Thanks Jeff
7 inches is a about right, or maybe alittle less, whatever makes the weights not bonk anything in the upper levels. As far as the stop works, if you have the UP set right to stop where you want, the down will take care of itself.

What clock mechanism do you recommend to replace a vintage 1968 Mason & Sullivan L50T clock mechanism????????
I built the walnut clock case in 1967 from plans sold by Mason & Sullivan, Osterville, Mass.. I bought & installed the clock mechanism L50T from Mason & Sullivan in 1968. Though difficult to see & read, the back plate of the mechanism contains only the following: Original Keininger, Made in Germany, a ‘gear wheel icon’ inscribing an A over letters KC and below the aforesaid info are what appears to be 12/71.
The mechanism is a chain-weight powered triple chime; selection of Westminster, St. Michael, and Whittington chimes.
The mechanism has been oiled annually but it has never been cleaned.
The clock ran faithfully from 1968 to November 2023 when it stopped on its own.
Repair or Replace time ???………………Warren
Though difficult to see & read, the entire back plate of the clock movement contains only the following: Original Keininger, Made in Germany, No (0) jewels unobluafeh (my guess at letters), a ‘gear wheel icon’ cotaining an A over letters KC and below the aforesaid info are what appears to be numbers 12/71.

Are you able to tell me the age of the clock and what the serial number means? Does the age matter?
Thank you,

Cannot tell by that number. Yes age matters but only because old oil becomes solid and wears the plates. These usually run 25-40 years before worn out and to get the new one or rebuilt. Of course the new one is less money than restoring the old, and lasts longer, get it quicker back.

I am working on a Menninger two weight 8 day clock movement. The existing weights are1583 frames each. The strike is extremely slow and will sometimes just stop mid strike. Every bushing has been replaced and all privets are perfect. The owner tells me the clock has always been a very slow striker. I’m thinking maybe the weights are not original and not heavy enough. How would I know if they are original.

HI, I have a mason & sullivan Grandfather clock the movement is a TU240 Moon dial 5 tubes 3 weights chain driven Westminster chimes lyre pendulum the only markings on the front plate is the number 74 Original Kieninger with a seal stamped on the plate no jewels unadjusted, This movement is supposed to have a swing of 10.25 inches it only moves 3 inches and runs fast like 14 minutes in 24 hours it has never kept good time no madder what is done to the pendulum. When it was new I took it the Mason & Sullivan co. at 39 Blossom AVE Osterville Cape Cod Mass 02655. The clock technician mounted it on the work rack the anchor arm started moving and he said there is nothing wrong here the movement it is fine. So for 25 years or so I have adjusted the time as needed. spent most of it’s life stopped. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. To the point of offering a replacement movement. I would like to know why the swing of the pendulum is only 1 inch
Yes that is the obsolete 5 tube Kieninger unit, we restore many of those because they are no longer made. We could offer an Urgos unit that will fit pretty easy also. The age is most likely around 50 years old on that one.
To slow time you only need a longer pendulum. In some instances if the advancement is excessive, it could be a worn escape wheel and when ever your not looking it goes tick tick tick tock tock tock instead of the standard tick tock like it should be.
We can swap it for the Urgos new unit, we can restore that one for you, you can buy a longer pendulum and try that instead and just oil it.
What is your pleasure

I have a K series 116 cm cable movement that keeps good time and chimes appropriately. It does not strike a consistent progression of hours. One time it may strike 5 and the next strike might be 8. Any thoughts?
This have to do with the mechanics in the front part of the movement, behind the dial. The best way to learn the mechanics of these components is to simply watch them in action.
When getting to the front of the movement by removing the dial, observe the racks motion during the strike. The rack is the saw like thing that drops down onto the snail looking thing that is part of the hour hand tube. If the rack is not connecting to the snail in a proper way, the strike will not strike the proper amount of times.
If the clock is striking the wrong number of hours some hours and not all, the snail (hour tube) must be turned slightly so the rack will fall on the snail’s humps correctly. The C clip comes off the gear it meshes with, so the hour tube can come up some and over the teeth of the other gear. The goal is to have the snail fall in the center of the hump instead of off to the side of it. If the clock strikes 12 and 1 oclock ok, then the rest will be fine.
If the rack is getting stuck on anything or if it falls behind the hour tubes “snail”, then the clock will strike the same amount of times every time, forever or some number beyond 12 times. It can fall behind the snail by changing hands, since the hour tube has the snail on it, it moves forward upon removing the hour hand. This can cause the rack to fall behind the snail and therefore does no good for counting strikes like it’s supposed to. The fix is to lift this rack with your finger and push the hour hand tube back so the rack falls on it.
My Kieninger has just stopped after 33 years since purchase in 1988. Its code number is 03 K 100cm. What movement number is equivalent to that

Once upon a time, Empire Clock sold a package containing a Kieninger wall movement. Their catalog item was 151-10-822, and was close to $1k. Is that package available anywhere today?
Not available anymore as the movement nor the dial is being made. Hermle is the way to go these days for that type of clock instead of Kieningr.

Hello, I have been trying to identify a grandfather clock movement. I just bought this clock and it needs some parts for the pendulum. Plus I would really like to know more about the clock. Does anyone recognize the attached clock? I cannot find any numbers or markings on it. I can provide other views including the whole clock if that would help. Thanks in advance if anyone can assist.
Sorry the email address of my first comment goes wrong so I post it again…
This resembles an early urgos mvt., and is of UW03…. series.
Please email pics of the back of the movement to clockworks@clockworks.com for identification

Looks like an Urgos UW03 series clock movement to me.

But you can be sure by getting the movement numbers off the back plate and seeing this link

If I remember right the leader is this one

And the suspension is usually this one, not always, grandfather sized big

I have a Kieninger clock with a number “106068” stamped under the name “Original Kieninger “
What year was it made?
After 1950 is all we know on that one. Most likely 1970s

Good evening, I have a Kieninger grandfather clock that I picked up at a garage sale this weekend, one of the pallets has broken off of the pendulum anchor, it looks replaceable as the pallets have set screws holding them into the anchor. The other issue is the pendulum suspension spring is sheared off, aside from these two things and the weights being over tightened which I was able to correct, it’s in decent shape.
I’m trying to find replacement parts for it. The only identification is on it is “Original Kieninger” and 12/66 also what looks to be a logo for Kieninger. What does this 12/66 mean? December 1966? What parts should fit this? I would like to be able to get it working again.
Thanks.
Best to email some pics of this one. Sounds like an H series if its chain driven with three weights. 12/66 is most likely the date, not sure until it is seen. Clockworks@clockworks.com is where to email pics
Thank you !

I have inherited a 82 R 80cm. Unfortunately the weights were lost at some point. Can you help me identify which weights go with this clock, and where I can get a replacement?
Thanks
Grant
Please email a photo or provide the movement numbers off the back plate of the clock to Clockworks@clockworks.com

I have inherited a keininger skeleton clock with S 81 on the movement what does this mean
Hi
Does this mean you need a new pendulum or are you looking for parts to a current pendulum?
Wood stick or Lyre style pendulum ?
